Been deliberating on buying the spare for a few months now, but have just gone ahead. Speaking to the parts guy at my local dealer, Ryland Cardiff. He says that the foam repair kit is ok but that it is so messy and sticky that tyre depots will not repair the tyre as it takes so long to clean it out. They will simply discard the tyre and you will have to but a new one, £60-70 maybe. Also to replace the foam kit will cost £60 as you can only use it once. The cost of the spare wheel is £100 so it is well worth buying it even if you only use it once.
But beware some cars are not supplied with jacks and wheel braces as the foam kit means that wheels do not need to be taken off.
