On the passengers side the ball is attached to the top of the strut, but on the drivers side the gaiter can be pulled down (the ball is not attached to the strut top), does anyone know how to fir it back on?

Ours was in for it's first service last week and to have just what you describe sorted out - they fixed a 'cap' on the top of the damper and it's been quiet ever since. Much better ride too.
