Nick, I don't think johnd was aiming any offence towards Croatia or its people, had this thread been posted a few years ago the comment would have been aimed at an englishman, we have recently seen a lot of migrant workers come to the UK and they are filling the roles that no-one in the UK now wants, as our society has developed there is a feeling among some people that these, more manual jobs are beneath them. This is not to say that in any way they should be given to immigrants from Europe, but these are of course jobs that transcend national boundaries, languages etc. and new-comers to the UK tend to find themselves in these roles. I am sure you would not find many of us leaving the country of our birth, doing what in most cases are often cold, dirty jobs and then sending the money home just to ensure our family back home are looked after. Yes a few of us might work overseas to earn more money, but we are driven by greed, not survival or a desire to develop or lives/families.
I think in certain cases we owe a big thanks to Poland, Croatia etc. without migrant workers the countries service sector would soon grind to a halt, leaving a lot of pretentious Brits with empty supermarket shelves, dirty hotels and cars that had not been valeted.
Sorry if it was not my place to butt in here............
