I believe this means if you park your car for a long period, several weeks or months.

I have had my switch set to "auto" since I got my car in May last year and have not had any problems with the battery etc.

I believe you know (since you also are a norwegian), here in Norway we have very cold winters so the condition of the battery is very critical - I beleive I had experienced any problems during the winter if there was a problem with the switch set to "Auto"...
