Although not easy, pick up the speaker leads at the back of the radio, I used an Autoleads SOT lead, to save cutting the original loom, literally 'cutting the amp' in to the break in the SOT lead. No need to get to the back of the speakers. The downside is that original (thin) speaker leads are still in place but easier than the alternative.
N.B. I am assuming that type R is similar?
