As a mechanical engineer I am quite happy to stick with the engine as designed.
You have to remember that these units spend million of hours in testing in labs, rolling roads and on tracks.
I'm sure that they have tested to the limit and then backed off 20% to give years of reliable motoring.
I used to have Escort RS Turbo's that I played about with. We managed to get 190bhp from one buy she lasted 4500miles before going into self distruct mode.
A 170bhp version lasted about 15k but my bog standard 140bhp was past 100,000 miles and still went like new.
