If you are really OCD throw the leather and brush away as these too will scratch the top coat.
Best process by far is to rinse, pre-wash (best with foam as this draws dirt off the surface) rinse then hand wash with mitts (not sponge) using 2 buckets, one for shampoo, one to rinse the mitt.
To dry use a microfibre cloth and Megs Quick detailer (spray on when wet)
This absolutely reduces the chance of scratching the paint.
BUT - your neighbours will think you're a freak
