Sorry to wander off topic a bit, but the mention of learning in the Triumph Herald brought this back to mind.
At the age of 17 (in nineteen canteen), I bought a second hand mini from a local garage and learned to drive in that, and the old man's Morris Minor

Going to the test centre the mini's foot brake failed completely.
Since the garage was on the way we stopped in to complain and they lent us a Herald which I used for the test.
It was the first one I had ever been in, and I got about 800 yards of practice on a straight road before the test.
The funniest bit was the "3-point turn".
You youngsters may not know this, but the Herald had a turning circle like a London taxi. The front wheels went practically to right angles when you gave it full lock.
Not being aware of that, I gave it full lock and proceeded to do a zero-point turn by doing a u-ey in a narrow side street.

"Aye - very good", says the examiner, "now turn by means of forward AND reverse gears". I did and I passed !
Strange car, the Herald, but I've always had a soft spot for it since.
