Perhaps it is better to upscale earlier in the electronic journey

However I get a better image if I upscale to 720p rather than 1080i on my DVD player. My TV is 1080p.

If I get a PS3, I have 2 options to connect it
1) via component to second set of components on LCD
2) via DVI (using a HDMI to DVI cable)

so - as the PS3 doesn't upscale on component, but does on HDMI, will I notice a difference in these 2 methods?

see - said I was confused!
I would connect the PS3 (thinking positive that you will get one!!!) to the TV using component, and then output the PS3 sound via optical out to the surround system (if it has an optical input). New (40gB) PS3s are pretty quiet BTW

Through The DVI.... You keep as much as possible the numeric chain treatment for a better result, and you put your audio out to your home cinema or through audio optical if existing, coaxial numeric if existing or the last solution through the standard audio (White and red) plug

sound will be either via the red/white to the TV is the wife is around, or via optical to my surround speakers if she's out

but back to the upscaling (or not!) of my DVDs - that's two replies (and thank you both very much ), but two different answers

Now that's cool!

Get a PS3 and a PSP so you can watch your OWN choice of TV channels or stored content anywhere in the world over the Internet

Good upscaling DVD players, such as the PS3 or some standalone players (even clearance HD DVD players!) will do a much more impressive job than the built in one on myst LCD or plasma displays. Until you see it, you can't really appreciate it.

I won't watch DVDs on my old (HDMI enabled, but no upscaler) any more, as the PS3 upscaling job makes a massive difference.

Then again, I try to avoid DVDs now anyway, Blu-ray has spoiled me!

it's an interesting idea though

just not sure quite how techy it's all going to have to get in order for me to set things up so that I could be in (say) London, jump onto a wireless net connection from my PSP, drill down through to my PS3 (all sorts of firewall issues there, surely?), and pull through live TV or a previously recorded program...

But as a gadget freak, it all sounds good

that would be because 1080i is just 540p interlaced

yes, you should

but cheers on the DVI comment!

streaming - I used to stream from my media centre to my 360 over wireless, and it worked, after a fashion...
Long time to cache, and if watching a movie, the cache emptied fairly quickly
Now wired, and all is good (except the 360 is too noisy to use as an extender really )

However - the "big new news" announcemt is that you will be able to stream from your PS3 (with an extra freebox box) to your PSP, wherever you are in the world with your PSP ('net connection obviously required!).
BUT, the PSP only uses wireless B, not wireless G.
So I'm wonderring how it will cope with live TV...

On a related, but seperate issue, had to laugh at the video where they were demoing the new freeview addon box

"and we just select this menu to watch TV".... pregnant pause... guy picks up the box obviously thinking "urk, it's busted, shouldn't be taking this long!", but tries to recover with "and as you can see, just 2 wires"... "urk, it's still not working, what's wrong with this &*^*&^&*^ thing, I look like a right prat!"... "and there we go!" ("phew, thank &*%^ for that, think I got away with it!"

It will also turn a BD disk into a PSP version for you to take away and you can also turn on you PS3 while out via your PSP

As a PSP is only using a small screen, does it only stream a compressed version not suitable for a normal TV?

So I guess that means you now have a PS3. Did you get anything good with it?

When I first got my PS3 I had component and DVI on the TV I was using at the time. The DVI connection is better. I of course now have a 1080P 50" Plasma (which I am using with my PS3 to reply to this thread).
