GPS mounts
So, my Garmin Nuvi arrived today, and I am very pleased so far. Not that I have had a chance to use it, the car's getting a spare fitted and the rear shocks replaced
It comes with 2 mounting options: Sucker on screen, or sucker on shiny disk that is stuck to dash. The disk mounting option is really appealing to me. I want it on the large flat area, in front of and to the left of the display screen with the climate control settings and radio display. It seems perfect there, it won't leave rings on screen, it won't obscure my vision, and it looks a lot tidyer. There is no documentation on the mounts, so it does not say if it is removable once it is installed. Obviously, it has to be fixed well enough to hold GPS steady, and allow the sucker to be stuck on and pulled off on a regular basis. What I'm wondering is if anybody has tried anything similar, and if so, can the mount be removed when I don't want it in the car anymore? Also, would you risk mounting the disk, or just make do with the windcreen mounting option? |

not done it with the Garmin, but had something which I guess was similar for my TomTom
I would most definately NOT go with the shiney disc! That just feels like a receipe for disaster when you want to remove it... The sucker on the window does work well - I think someone (Pottsy?) uses similar for their GPS camera thing. For me, it depends where you put it, and how long the arm is. Pottsy's (if indeed it was him) looked nice and tidy. His unit ends up where my snooper is - which is not where you are suggesting... He went (and I followed!) for mounting it to the Right of the speedo This is nicely in line of sight, and also allows for easy routing of power cables to be tucked out of sight. I actually had a bracket on the back of the snooper, originally designed to stick it directly to the windscreen with no 'arm' I removed the 2 suction pads, bent the bracket to a right angle, and gently pushed it into the gap in the dash trim. As usual, lots of waffle there, sorry, hope some of it helps! |

I take that all back!
sorry! found Pottsy's thread (at least I got that right!) he didn't use the suction arm and his snooper isn't quite where mine is. But the rest holds true! Honest! |

I have a nuvi 350, excellent piece of kit.
I have attached a picture of mine in position to the right of the windscreen. You can take the mount on and off, but I prefer to leave mine on all the time for ease of use. I have found that it helps to fix the mount whilst the car is warm and/or the weather is warm. This appears to create a better seal. I have tucked the cable down the door jamb and under the dash, holding it with some cable grips from B&Q and cable ties. I use an extension lead for the power which is tucked down by the drivers seat runner and well out of the way of my knee and leg. |

Oh, OK thanks, TT,
I don't know why, I think I'd prefer it towards the centre of the car, rather than to the side. I think I read somewhere that where you show it was the recommended place by a manufacturer (tomtom?). It is more out of the way there, you win! I wouldn't try that if you like driving with open windows round town, it wouldn't stay there long! Is it me, or does it look like that device in the photo is floating in mid air? EDIT, Thanks for the picture, Honda100. I think that is where mine will live, but I wont risk leaving mount in place when I'm parked! Mine is only the 300, no blutooth or anything, but it is great, much better than my old street pilot! |

Bungle - I was wondering about that on Pottsy's Snooper as well !!!!
Honda100 - sorry, being thick here, but is your Nuvi mount attached to the window using a suction cup, as I think TT has suggested to Bungle ? |

I have had 2 Garmin sat navs:
First - GPSV - this used either a semi permanent or a permanent sticky pad to hold a quick release plate to the dash. Second - Quest - this uses a suction cup to attach to the screen (or the vertical bit of plastic to the left of the display panel - recommended) The sticky pad is far better. If you ever want to remove it the instructions state use alchohol - wouldn't like to, as I'm sure it would make one hell of a mess. (Cant remember if I used the perm or semi perm - but its still there) Suction cups - I'm about to order my third under warranty just as my GPS goes flying across the dash again. I suppose its easily transferable from one side of the dash to the other!!! Pics of Garmin Quest suction mount: Last edited by Miggins; 23rd September 2006 at 14:02. |

I have a Nuvi 300 mounted similar on the right, really low down in the corner, really clear and easy to use there but not obstructive ....
I now have the GTM12 Traffic master aerial connected, which finally stops it trying to put me on the M25 in the morning .... I leave the mount on the screen... bit dodgey i know but i park on my private drive and secure car park, the sucker sticks on really well (for me anyway !) Just for info there is a connection for the power lead in the bottom of the dash/screen mount... i didnt find it for weeks... and it saves you having to connect the power into the side every time you want to use it. |

Also make sure you download "POI Loader" and "Web Updater" from Garmin
Webupdater checks ALL the software versions and installs updates directly through the USB cable POI Loader lets you import flat file lists from the web of speed cameras and shop/parking locations etc in addition to the new Garmin Speed camera markers !! PM me if you need any help as i have found LOADS of info and downloads. |
