It's easy to judge without all the facts, but the crosswind at that time exceeded the design limits of the aircraft by a significant margin (so the approach should never have been made), and when the first gust upset the aircraft an immediate go around should have been initiated, which wasn't.
From what we can see, not very clever at all. phpOltUWB.jpg undhp145uc1ic7.jpg |

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation, and how the crew handled it, I expect that at the time, they thought they were doing the right thing. As somebody who also responsible for the lives of hundreds of people whilst at work, I and my colleagues never go out of our way to do something dangerous. But, as humans, we all make mistakes, misjudgements and have just plain forgetfulness moments. Unfortunately, the technology can only cover us so far, then it is down to your training and experience. |

Foggy - indeed. I maybe should have put more weight on the precursor, I was just trying to discuss what appears to have happened (we know what the wind was and we can see the results). Crosswind limits are complex, and in theory you can exceed what has been demonstrated by a test pilot - but if anything goes wrong then you are on your own. For that reason (and one of general common sense) I have never encountered any case of the limit being deliberately exceeded.
It will be interesting to see if anything is made public - mostly so that all other A320 series pilots can learn from other people's mistakes and avoid making them themselves. There's a lot more on this here, but be careful because for every real pilot posting there are 2 flight sim idiots. |

As for the PPRuNe, places like this annoy me up sometimes. In jobs where mistakes can be very public, there always seems to be somebody telling you how they could have done it better, what went wrong (without having any insight or inside knowledge) and coming up with wild rumours. A friend of mine was killed in a train crash at Cowden back in 1994. He was the guard on one of the trains. There was some very ill informed rumours put about after the crash that he was actually driving the train, although there was absolutely no evidence that he actually was, there was also no way of proving that he wasn't either. This meant that a good, honest man, was vilified in death. This, coupled with the bulls**t journalism that went along with the story means that now I get very annoyed with most of the coverage of serious incidents. Rant Over |

Very scary and i dont like flying at the best of times. That would almost be as bad as show the start of Final Destination movie to passengers on the plane just as it was taking off

Or as in Airplane where they are showing the crash test videos as the in flight movie!!! Sadly I recognised the film as the one where a DC8 had its wings ripped open to show that a special fuel would not explode, unfortunately it did. ![]() |

Totaly off topic - but when they say "cabin crew: disarm slides, crosscheck and report" I always get a mental picture of the crew starting to fight each other with hockey sticks.... |
