Other PS -

Just incase anyone is thinking of getting a PS3 after reading this thread - DON'T just use ebay!

60Gb PS3s (the ones with more USB slots and backwards compatibility for PS2 games) are going for £400 plus postage on ebay at the mo.
Game are selling pre-owned ones with a choice of 2 (out of 4) games (RFOM, MotorStorm, and I think Ridge Racer and some F1 sim) for £340.
My local store in Cardiff recons they get about 1 in each week, and they sell it almost straight away, so you might need to phone around to get lucky.

40Gb PS3 - most places have a new PS3 at £300 at the mo, often bundled with GT5
ebay are going for around £250 plus post
Game pre-owned are £240 I think, inc a couple of games - and they tend to have a few of these in

good luck!

General PS3 question (sorry!) - Mine runs quite loud - I thought they were supposed to be almost silent?
Would one of those fan things on the back help?

cheers!

PS - PSN ID is the same as my logon in here

The 40 GB ones are alot quieter as they have a newer chipset that produces less heat (and consumes less electricity) so can have a less powerful fan. Mine (40GB) is almost silent until it has been on for nearly 3 hours. I borrowed my brother's 60GB one before I had mine and the difference is noticable.

PS Welcome to the sect!!!

Oh dear...
I got my 60Gb one partly to use as a BR disc player for the family TV, but set it up in my office to test it first.
Gut feel says that it's too noisy for the living room!

Which shucks means I might need to get a 40Gb for the family then...

TT

If Game will swap, then you can just get a £5 card reader and a USB splitter and you have all the connectivity of a 60GB and Sony show you in the handbook how to upgrade the HD to any laptop one, or you can use a external one.
With electricity prices going through the roof you can claim the lower power consumption will pay for the upgrade.
That was the argument I tried to use when swapping a CRT tv for an LCD tv. The only problem is when you are asked the breakeven period!!!

Good luck

Alan

TTDegs, the EX wheel is, obviously with the massive price difference, not on the same level as the G25. I've been into games for years & it's the best wheel I've had though. If you're used to playing with a joypad it takes alot of getting used to. The only real differences I can see between them is the G25 has a proper gear lever while the EX has the L1/R1 buttons mounted behind the wheel like a paddle shift & the G25 steering angle is ALOT bigger.
As for the fan, people have reported different fan noise levels. It seems quite a few factors (such as positioning, etc) affect. Playing Blu-ray films is well known in the PS3 community to make your fan go into hyperdrive. I've heard that those add-on fans can help but have no experience of them.
It's been very widely rumoured that a firmware update will be coming soon which will allow 40gb machines to play PS2 games & that Sony will make some available to download from the PSN store to coencide with this.

My 60GB is whisper quiet. It makes about 1/4 of the noise of my PC idling, and is barely audiable at 6' away, even if it has been on all day playing/folding/playing discs etc. Without exaggeration, it is about half as noisy as my friends 360. A noisy one could be due to poor ventilation arounf the sysyem, causing it to suck hot 'exhaust' back in, or very unlikely, a bad cooling fan.
I have a couple of usb powered cooling fansm which I use occasionally when i have my PS3 in my slightly smaller than ideal AV unit. I use them to disperse the hot air from the side and back.
On a similar not, I have hear that the cooling is much more efficient in the vertical position, so if that's an option...

As far as the G25 wheel compaerd to the EX, the difference is rather large. The majority of the G25 is stainless steel, whre the EX is very plasticky. One review I read even called the EX still a 'toy' compared the G25. I would probably agree.
Theses are the advantages of the G25 I can think of;
- Dual motors for better feedback and ressitance
- Much better construction and meterials
- Pedals are properly weighted with gas cylinders behind them. Plastic, cleaper pedals have no resistance, especially on the brake, which makes accurate braking impossible
- 6 speed box
- Leather wrapped wheel for comfort and realism.

The only downsides are that you can still feel and hear the gears in the wheel, which is still much better than most other wheels, is still noticable.
The 6 speed gear shifter feels slightly less well built than the wheel or pedals, and is a little light. It is usable, but not quite the same quality as the rest of it.

As far as noisy pedals, i'm not sure exactly what you mean. Coming off the pedals quickly does make the pedal hit back to resting position with a bit of a clunk, but nothing that is worth worrying about.

Another feature i don't know about til I got it was the sequential mode. Turning a dial on the gear assembly sets the gear stick to a sequential mode, and enables the flappy paddles behind the wheel to change gear. A feature on most other wheels, but one I don't know the G25 had.

My fan sounds different depending on where it is. If I use it in the bedroom on the carpt the fan is very noisy, on the stand under my TV it is whisper quiet.

I can't wait until next Friday Time Crisis 4 is out!!!!

I didn't even know this coming out that soon. Don't think I'll be getting it. It'll be more expensive than usual thanks to the gun & I don't fancy sticking the sensor bar to my LCD TV. I've got plenty of PS3 stuff anyway- PSEye, steering wheel, GH3 guitar...
At the moment, I'm looking forward to GTA4 & Battlefield Bad Company.

That colour is awful! Not quite tangerine orange is it? Guns should be silver, black or grey. I heard that the gun will come with a sensor bar for mounting on your TV, very similar to the Wii. Whether you only need this if you're using a LCD TV or not I don't know. We'll have to wait for sonicsteve's verdict to find out.

I guess the colour is so it isn't confused with a real gun by anyone (who might be watching you).

On the GTP front anyone managed to clear all 15 cars in start from the back in either class C or B. Best I can do is 2nd place. Any tips appreciated.

wow, cheers all!

In no order at all:
I'll move the PS and see if I can get some more air around it - it's sitting under my desk at the moment, which is not ideal...

I ended up going for the Logitech Force Pro - sort of half way betwen the EX and the GT
No six speed box, but it does come with a sequential shifter (and paddles) - and I got it for £55, which is rather less than the £150+ that the GT goes for.
GT would have been nice, but there is no way I could justify the extra dosh

regards winning from the back - try fiddling with the driving settings
With all the safety aids turned on, it's safe (surprise), but equally it won't let you take liberties - which help when looking for the extra split second...

Which ones you turn off are down to personal preference / driving style - but for example I set traction control to off so that I can get at least some power down whilst mid corner
Find a nice short and twisty track (I used London), and make a note of your best lap times with the various aids turned on / off
I took about 2 to 3 seconds off my best time in the end

Obviously, as you turn more aids off, the car becomes less forgiving to driver error!

PS - back to the wheel...
Logitech is releasing a new version of the Pro at the end of this month, with extra dials to change brake bias and damping and stuff on the fly.
No UK price yet, but about $150 in the States

PS3 moved...
It was already in the vertical

But standing it with the vented side on the floor probably wasn't helping...

The big 'PLAYSTATION3' logo is now the right way up (kinda a clue really!), and 20 mins of GT5 hasn't had the fans kicking in

colour me numpty
