I seriously concidered a Focus when I got my Civic, but the main thing that put me off was (as I did not want (couldn't afford) a new one), was I could not find a less than year old 2.0 TDCi with optional ESP. Would not be a problem now as it is std. |

Aside from all the specific digs, the bits of your post i've highlighted, I think, tell the story. EVERY car out there has had a lemon version of it built, one that goes wrong all the time, has all the problems etc, there is then the same model, spec that NEVER goes wrong, never has an issue etc etc. I can assure you that when the Focus first launched, in its first two years, it was riddled with problems as with many other 'new' models from a variety of manufacturers. Audi TT's being recalled to have spoilers fitted so that at speed they didn't fall off the road etc etc - ring any bells? I don't know of your specific issues with the cars you had and i'm genuinely sorry to hear of your woes with what is widely regarded as one of the best hatches about today. Please don't think i'm saying your car of choice is awful as it certainly isnt. It also isn't perfect was my inital point. |

As I've said before many manufacturers are envious of Honda's legendary reliability and wish they only had the known probs Honda have, and I mean preminum brands at that! |

And I can assure you that I had one of those NEW Focus models in fact I was one of the first on the road ( S plate - 99) I had it until I traded it in for the Civic, in those seven years it only ever saw the dealership for its annual service and two early recalls that hadn't affected my car. |

And that answers the comment that all early cars get problems!! I never heard that they were particularly riddled with faults either... Last edited by alanwalne; 27th April 2008 at 13:33. |

Yeah, it had two recalls for minor adjustments that I was unaware of. Which would you go for if you had the choice? The Focus above or the civics below ? Hmmmm It will be a tough choice Replacement shock absorbers (on both civics) replacement gearbox, replacement clutch, replacement windscreen rubber seal, replacement climate control parts, replacement steering column, replacement boot struts, replacement window seal, replacement bumpers due to light fittings rubbing off the paintwork, replacement fuel filler cap (twice), replacement linkage parts on windscreen wipers (twice) oh an not forgetting two radios with extremely poor reception, the knocking noise each morning, a noise like an old creaking boat when steering, the fear of the car rolling away due to the defective handbrake, the need for a re-spray due to the extremely poor quality paintwork ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I could go on but im boring myself Yes the Civic is a cracking car !!!!!!!!! |

We all know that these days, we are the vehicle testers and to adopt an early model is sometimes folly. What does annoy me is the likes of Renault who have been continually featured on consumer programs because their Mk2 Clio has a very serious bonnet catch problem and they still refuse to recall and recify the problem. Because of this I will never, ever buy Renault. |

We can keep running round in circles here but in a way, you have confirmed the point. YOU had a Focus, early generation and had no faults. YOU had a Civic that was riddled with faults. Ergo - in your OPINION, the Focus is a much better car. There will be many people out there that have had the opposite experience and will feel the opposite about the cars, not only Ford vs Honda but with all and any makes. I have had the fortune/mis fortune to work for a few of the major manufacturers over the past 10 years or so and can honestly say that each and every one of them have cars that some people think are horror stories and others love to bits. |

I only speak the truth and the truth is my TWO civics were rubbish. I have NEVER advised anyone not to buy a civic or made out that ALL civics are the same as many people often do about other makes. |

As a complete aside, if what I read in a car magazine is true (not sure which one), rumour has it that Ford are going to fit ESP on the new Fiesta across the range, then congratulations to them.
This bucks the trend from 5 years ago when along with Vauxhall, Ford were slow to fit ABS as standard to mid size cars before the gentleman's agreement made it almost law. |
