XBOX - Connecting external HDD

Been at my brothers all day trying to get his external HDD to connect to his Xbox via USB, has anyone tried this, or know a way of doing it.

Things tried:

formatting to FAT32 - couldn't see it
only storing music in root folder - couldn't see it
tried 5GB, 10GB & 32GB partitions active and non active - couldn't see it

any ideas would be greatly received, i did explain about just installing a bigger internal HDD, but that's not an option at the moment

Did you consult the xbox 360 website? I can see no reason why it wouldn't work easily.

hey CP, long time no hear, you alright mate?

Yeah i've googled it all over the place, some people say they have been able to do it (with HDD up to 100GB!) and others say that it's not possible

Not an XBOX expert, but can it depend on having the latest firmware or something in the XBOX?

that's what i thought, and made sure he was up to date with his firmware
