Warranty Cover

Is the water pump covered on a basic warranty?

It's on my RAV4, basically it's my second RAV4 (upgraded due to new family member) and noticed that the engine was slightly more noisy than the first. I mentioned it to the dealer and he said it had been fully checked blah blah blah. However the rattling noise started to get louder last week, culminating in the water pump breaking and all the water gushed out from under the engine bay.

Oops, forgot to mention that it has been nearly a year since I bought the car.

I would certainly think so. It's an integral part of the engine.

PS: I've just seen it's nearly a year old. How long is the warranty? Surely at least a year!

Although, saying that, dealers will often be able to 'keep a customer happy' by being able to rectify faults just outside the warranty period if it is an obvious original manufacture product failure, as this appears to be. I've never known a water pump to fail in any of my cars over my (almost!) 50 years of driving.

Even if it is one of these insurance based warranties, I would hope something such as a water pump will be covered.

UPDATE:

Just called the garage where I bought the car from and they've told me that the mechaninc said the water pump broke because there was no water in there, in other words it's my own fault for not keeping it topped up.... BULLSH*T I kept it topped up at all times and regularly checked it (once a week, and before any journey further than 50km). There was never a leak under the car either so where did all the water go?

Here is what my answer will be to the garage:

this was the instant (electronically time and date stamped) the engine made "that noise". I pulled over and was greeted by a stream of LOTS of water gushing out of the water pump.

is this or is this not proof that there was plenty of water in there?

Sounds like a dodgy garage to me. I hope you are going to give them hell.

Stand at the entrance and tell every customer what a bunch of crooks they are if they refuse to fix it.

yup, he's a bit of a crook, but because there's only a few dealers out here in Cyprus that deal with the british forces, he's kind of the least worst out of a bad lot.

in the end, he tried to make me pay the full €309, then I pulled out the pictures and he agreed to go 50/50 with me.

yeah, I did lose out on €150 but it's better than the full €300
