My Civic had power steering, twin air bags, central locking, electric windows and a sunroof. It had a hell of a lot going for it, for it being the base model. |

Basegreen, just did another search and found this website. It's much better than Parkers and lets you compare cars. Also gives you the specs.
WiseBuyer's Guides - Car specs Choose a manufacturer to check the car's spec, view standard equipment and check optional extras. www.wisebuyers.co.uk |

Found this for you -
http://www.used-perodua-cars.co.uk/u...AXPO64347.html It could do 110 km/h but i would not recommend driving in on the motorway. It's light and could be blown off by side wind. |

i know ill probs get a lot of stick for this (but im willing to fight my corner) but have you not thought about a smart fortwo?? i know people think they are unsafe etc blah blah blah BUT....... they are ace little cars and i know 4 websites full of people that would agree. they are low insurance(group 2), low tax (£40) and the fuel consumption is excellent.
just another idea for you. XX |

I'd vote for an early 1.0 Yaris. Don't worry about high mileage, they wear well. Actually a really fun drive, economical, very reliable, frugal, spacious and so on. Just fit good tyres and bob's your uncle.

I would have to agree with Pottsy... 1.0l Yaris. Great little motor. Should be a few knocking around. Surprisingly fun to rag as well. The little three pot thrums along and it feels quicker than it is. Not as bad on the motorway as you would think either.
Cheers Elis |

BG, I'd consider a Ford Ka. This is no wind-up. Our daughter has one, apart from annual service and MOT, she does nothing to it. Never let her down.
Cheap as chips to run. Any garage can work on it. |

The Yaris is slightly outside the budget, really..
But it's looking like its between that and a Ka. Yaris' i'm seeing have done around 75-85K, the Ka's a little less ~60K |

Can I throw a Volkswagen Lupo/Seat Arosa into the mix?
Aside from the classsy interior, it's a chuckable little car with decent steering and gearchange. The 1.0 litre is fine for town driving and you should be able to pick one up privately for approx 2k (year 2000 car). Build quality is also v. good. For a bit more money you can also get an early 1.4 Seat Arosa (99-2000). Basically, the same car as the Lupo just with different front-end styling/interior trims. Of course, I admit the VW badge does hold somewhat more cachet than the Seat's. Although both meet the specs you laid out and either would make a fine car for a novice driver. |

Well, even from a dealer you can get a very tidy example (on a 2000 plate) for £2500 with approx. 40-50k on the clock. Privately, you're talking bang on £2k for one with similar mileage.
Do come in some funny colours I grant you, but mechanically they're a good bet. Autotrader has lots for those prices... |

I have owned a Ford KA in the past and found it a good drive, the only real drawback is that the basic KA does not have power stearing (Not needed realy the car is that light) and no ABS.

How about a new shape Suzuki Swift? Are they too pricey? They certainly look better than a Ka or an old Yaris. And they come pretty well equipped.

CopyCat,
For the budget there's no way you'll get a new shape Swift. Or for that matter an early Honda Jazz. An old shape one maybe, but then I'd rather walk. Up until recently Suzuki made awful cars!! |

Went out today and bought a (dealer) Ford Ka. Registered end of 2000, 1yr warranty, 12months MOT, PAS, metallic paint with body coloured bumpers, airbag, alloys, CD player, Air Con, etc. Got £1K off the windscreen price with a lot of haggling, and part-exing my old shed of a Corsa too for £500! Parkers/Glass's suggests a retail (post-haggle) of about £2800, I paid 2K including the Corsa. And it was nearby.

Looks nice. Even has those black plastics that will match your Civic if you ever park next to each other.
