dare I say it (I know that French cars aren't loved in here
but we recently sold the wifes 206. 1.4GLX Auto 5 door, with all the trimmings bar the sunroof. Got 3K for it, which is a bit above your price range, but it was an immaculate Y reg with very low mileage - guess you could pick up an older one a bit cheaper We never had any problems with it - although we didn't really use it all that much. It was great for a new driver (as my wife was when we got it) lots of visibility, light steering, small ish for parking but big enough to carry stuff was cheap insurance too |

Ford Ka. 1.3 collection.
Got one for my girlfriend when she passed her test. It is OK, it's got eleccy windows and central locking, but no air-con. It is certainly small, and has PAS and a driver's airbag. It does drive well for a small car, although it doeas make me feel slightly cramped. The back seats are usable if only used occasionally and not for long journeys. I would definately recommend one. From personal experience, I would give Clios a WIDE birth, they realy are that bad and unreliable. |

I always joke about Fords. Found On Rubbish Dump, or Fix Or Repair Daily, but it is a good runaround.
Toyota Aygos are good, but will probably be over that price range. Good luck finding a suitable car, remember to post some piccies in the gallery when you get it! |

for the money maybe about a 1.25 fiesta... will be a bit old though.
or a Nissan Micra old shape late plate... The older toyota Yaris; are getting down to that price for a 1.0 or 1.3 There's the old shape astra with the 1.7diesel the older pre quad lap polo's (1.4se), or if your lucky a quad lamp 1.4tdi for a bit more. Lots of first gen focus 1.6's getting down there to when they are a bit leggy.. other than that maybe an old mark three or four VW golf tdi 90 in s trim. Even the bora 1.4 etc are at that level. Hope that helps, shame about the french cars though... the clio seems to make a good first time steed for many + the prices are ever so resonable for a 65dci.... just a thought. Cheers Elis |

Guess I had a bad two! The first, a Y reg spent more time at the garage getting electrical faults, and bits falling off repaired, I replaced ity with a 51 reg, and had the same problems. Engine would stall while idling, system faults, and on the last day before I traded it, the greabox self-detructed. So from my experience, I say avoid Clios. The dealers were terrible too, the could not gave a damn!

Another one for the clio's - it was my first car and its great as the visability is very good. The front wing was plastic too - never bumped it but useful for the early days dogems!!

Yaris - didnt think of that, good point. There's a few around at that price point, but with pretty high mileage. I'm not keen on buying private either.

How much do early Jazzes go for? I though the loner I had did quite nicely around town.
It would be nice to get a small Japanese car, but they tend to be that bit more expensive... |

I'd have a look on www.parkers.co.uk. It gives you reviews on cars, what to look for, good and bad points, insurance groups, what to pay etc.
I part exchanged my '98 "R" reg Civic, 1.4i 3 door for £1200. It only had 54,000 on the clock and was immaculate, easy to drive and totally reliable. It had good visibility as well so would be ideal for a new driver. My friend's just passed her test and she's got a Ford Ka. It's a "R" reg and she's finding it difficult to drive as it doesn't have power steering. |

R is a very early one - finding it hard to figure out which years have which options to be honest (For any car)..
W reg is the age I'm looking at. |
