digital SLR experts out there?
realise this might not be the best place to ask, but seeing as how I 'know' you lot
One of the things I;ve been meaning to get back into for ages is a spot of picture taking. Bearing in mind that the last 'decent' camera I had was an Olympus OM10 (yes that's right - back in the day when 35mm film was as good as it got!), and that my missus seems to have appropriated our new point n shoot T9... I'm sort off in the market for a low end digi SLR. One of those things I was putting off - can't really justify £400 But today, I just missed out on a half price opening day sale at our local Jessops - E305 for £200 so the bug is biting again anyway. To cut my ramblings short 2nd hand - anyone reckon it's possible to get a semi-decent something for under £250? (and if so - what? general use - anything from close up macros to waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy off in the distance action shots other than that - I like lots of buttons |

If you want to buy into the Canon system, a 300D, 10D or a 350D would be a good way to start. You should be able to pick up a body for around £250-300.
300D = 6MP. Cheap plastic build. 350D = 8MP. Cheap plastic build, but much better than the 300D. Might be too small for your hands. 10D = 6MP, better much build, bigger, heavier, better auto focus. |

Forgot to mention, lenses are expensive. A good macro, telephoto and a normal walkabout lens will cost you well over £1000. Cut corners and you'll probably end up regretting it a few months down the line.
Have you thought about a SLR-like digital camera? |

Nikon do some nice DSLRs like the D50. You will probably end up with a general use lens with it, but will need to invest in descent tele/macros/wide angle lenses. I actually know that Nikon do a clever lens that ranges from a fairly good tele, to a descent wide angle, with some clever gubbins and a bit of magic.
Canon's EOS range are excellent IMO, and I really like their long tele lens with image stabiliser built in |

TT,
The 350D is excellent, and even with a medium quality walkabout lens (I use the 17-85 IS) will give really good results for most situations. But then you'll want a nice macro lens, and possibly a half good telephoto, and even used we're more like £2,500 than £250. I'd suggest trying out a Panasonic FZ7. There's an FZ8 out which will help drive down the FZ7 prices. |

My missus has a EOS canon 35mm and it is awesome. The lenses fit straight onto the Digital SLR EOS range. I tried to get her the 350D for christmas but my local shops had sold out and couldn't get one in time for xmas.

My Missus has a Nikon D70 - which is outrageously top notch. You can pick them up from eBay quite cheapish these days as Nikon have not long released the D80.....

I have a 300D and think it's a great piece of kit. The problem with getting S/H SLR's is you don't know how well it's been looked after, even if it looks great on the outside it could easly have had a knock and the mirrors/prizms are all wrong and you wonder why nothing is in focus.
As Dawson said the 350D is a bit on the small size for big man hands. On the plus side for Canon they are putting our some specific lenses just for their digital range much chaper then they would be for a normal 35mm SLR. I have seen a 10-22mm Wide angle Zoom for about £350 on tinternet (That is cheap honest) I would recommend going for proper SLR over the 'bridge' type offerings |
