Sarahjo,
OK, here goes: The size of the aircraft doesn't matter, so long as it has gas turbine engines. All passenger aircraft now have turbine engines. Some of these turbines have a fan shaped propeller pushing the air (these are called turbofan engines) and some have a propeller shaped propeller pushing the air (turboprops). So all are powered by turbines, and so all are safe. Here's a safe aircraft with props inside a case: a319.jpg And here's a safe aircraft with props not in a case: dash8.jpg Now, would a McDonalds manager eat out at a McDonalds? Probably not, because he knows what goes on. The pilot community is small, and we all know many others that fly for many different airlines. These airlines all have different safety systems and cultures, and treat their employees differently. And I would happily fly on any European airline, with the exception of a small Italian one, and an Irish one. Purely because those two keep having remarkably close calls with the ground. So don't worry about the aircraft, and don't worry about the airline, unless it's one that you know has had close calls. Try and think of the last incident involving a UK airline - 1980's I think it was... You'll be fine. Don't forget to tell the crew that you're nervous though, they'll then look after you, and are quite used to it. |

Good post Pottsy, found it interesting.
I have flown in smallish plane from Bournemouth (Hurn) airport - known as a whisper jet - to Cyprus and in 767s and 747s from Gatwick to the States. Does the engine bit apply to them as well? Sorry for my ignorance - to me they are all jets. Can't say I have ever had a bad flight or landing (been going to the states every year (except 2004) since 1997) but I have only flown UK firms (Virgin, BA, XL, and a few other charter firms) and have only respect for you pilots. Not trying to frighten you sarajo - honest. I know how you feel - my first EVER flight was to the USA (and its 9 HOURS) and I was terrified. Once the staff knew it was our first ever flight they were kindness itself and made sure we were ok.
Because of them we have flown quite happily since. Also I hate being driven by other people so everytime I get in someone elses car I am terrified - so I do understand what you are going through. I even hate being driven by hubbie in my own car and he is a very good driver. |

i've only ever had one bad landing...... looked like we were descending through clouds out of the window.... but under the clouds was fog which all blended into one..... we "landed" with such force we bounced back up then bounced again from left wheel to right. When the plane stopped everyone clapped and cheered and the pilot came on the tannoy and said he was sorry for the bumpy landing. we then couldn't take off (same plane stopover thingy at dublin) cos he said there was fog at manchester and he didn't have ILS or something like that!!
flown loads of times since, never had probs or get worried. more likely to have someone hit your car (TC) than have an incident in a plane. |

Don't be alarmed - just increase the odds!
Fly with the Army Air Corps - great fun - especially when they deliberately drop a few thousand feet out the sky to take a closer look at the ground.
I flew with Thai air and was most disconcerted to see how glibly they went through the life jacket drill - it was over in seconds. Yes I know its not going to help much at 30,000 ft but all the same I was flying over a lot of water and landing at an airport by the sea. Some tips Sit near a door - pref within 7 rows and near the wings Wear your seat belt all the time and know how to release it Count the number of rows to the nearest exit. Better if you don't have a row of seats directly in front of you (and other bits I cant remember) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/5402342.stm |

No bad landings here, just an aborted take off, we were well down the runway when the engines were cut and the brakes applied rather sharpish, we pulled off and sat on a quiet corner of Edinburgh airport for an hour with the engines revving, and slowing down again, then as calm as you like the standard BA pilots voice came on the tannoy, and apologised for the aborted take off, "but we had a few lights pop up", "we'll go round again and have another go", then spending 1 hour wondering if the lights might spoil the landing at Heathrow.
Thinking of perceived close calls, we were flying back from Entebbe in Uganda a couple of years ago, I was looking out of the window, somewhere over southern Libya when the plane made a violent swing to the right, and a plane flew the other way, a few hundred (maybe even thousand) feet below, made my butt pucker alright! |
