Where are all the new cars?

I commute along the M4 from Basingstoke to Bracknell every day, and so far, I haven't seen a single 07 reg car (of any make)!

While I don't keep a record, I'm sure that it can't be this long after a new reg comes out before I have seen one.

How is working the reg plate system in the UK ?

here in France it is working this way :

XXX AAA XX :
(c) (b) (a)

(a) : two digit for the location area (Département) from 01 to 95 (Plus 971 to 974 for overseas departement) Corsica (n°20 originaly) was splitted in two 2A and 2B. The N° of the département was given in alphabetical order Ain : 01, Aisne:02, Allier (03) etc. except for Paris (75) and the adjacent Dept. (from 91 to 95).

(b) & (c) : Two letters and Four digit or three letters and three digits giving the registration number in the département where the car is registered. The sequencial order is 0001 AA to 9999 ZZ then 001 AAA to 999 ZZZ

So It is impossible in france to say if a car is a new one or not by looking at the reg plate because if you are moving to another Département you have to re-register your car !

This system will be change (must be ?) next Year for a common register plate n° witch will be given to the car for it whole life this system will be AA-000-AA

In the UK:

XX NN XXX

The first XX is the region code

The NN is the year mark:

(Sep 06 - Feb 07 will be under the 56 ID)
(Mar 07 - Aug 07 will be under the 07 ID)
(Sep 07 - Feb 08 will be under the 57 ID)

The final XXX is a random series of letters

I've seen one!

In the traffic jam in the roadworks on the M4 this evening. An 07 Ford Focus.

Just behid it was a car transporter with 9 nearly-new Hondas: 4x Civic, 1x Accord and 4x CR-V.

Glad I don't have that journey to Woking every day, it's bad enough just doing the A3 to and from Woking.

I've seen 2 07 plates, in fact the first one I saw was on relase day, on one of those self drive hire vans.
