I really like the idea, and subtle differences of the '888' special edition VXR, but then again, there's nothing out at the moment, for less than £40,000 that beats a Type R on 19" Rage alloys!!!!!
That said, the Monaro VXR certainly floats my boat! |

As much as I try I can't divorce the VXR's looks from the fact that I know it's an Astra. I just wouldn't buy a Vauxhall although in reality they are probably very good cars. Arguably the VX220 was superior in design to the Elise and I would have an Elise any day.
I do think the Astra looks better than a lot of other current hot hatches (I can't belive how dated the Golf looks) but I do prefer the Type R. I loved the look of the Civic from early concept shots - even the rear end which I know many people have issues with. |

Theres no question i'd have the civic over the vxr, although i do have a new vauxhall vivaro sportif for work and i cant fault it, its the best van ive had, fast, economical and looks pretty good for a van...but you need something with a bit more style for you main car and thats where the civic wins hands down over the vauxhall. |

I have yet to drive one that doesn't leave me very cross - Coarser, Nova, Disastra, OhMyGa, Vectra (I feel sick just with the memory), Frontera (Clarkson: "Frontera drivers demonstrate in their purchase that they know nothing about cars") - and so on. I'm sure there must be good models somewhere, but I've yet to find one. |

In a moment of sheer madness, I actually had a 24hr test drive of a VXR when deciding what to get this time round.
Admitedly it was a Zafira VXR, which was the only reason I tried it out - to see if they really had dared to put a 240bhp engine in a people carrier (they had Didn't even look at the Astra. Looks quite nice, but you know that you're going to find one at every set of lights with some flyboy rich kid (or more to the point, incredibly in debt kid, or I've got a rich daddy kid* ) in it. * based upon my experience. In the Motor Finance industry, generally speaking, those rich 'kids' who have actually earnt their money generally have more taste / sense than those who didn't. But that's another story altogether, and not for this thread So. VXR or R? R VXR or any other car on the road ** - any other car on the road ** unless it's made by Vauxhall. or Ford. or Kia. etc. In which case I'd rather walk |

Well, back in the 'Ancient Times ' , I had an Astra GTE Mk1. It was a pretty quick, and comfortable beast, and I kept it for about 7 years (until the paint started to peel off the roof! ... WARNING don't over-polish your motor
After a few misc cars, I have my Faithful Nissan Almera GTi, which I have had since new in 1997. Again, a pretty quick, but not so comfortable beast But looking to future, at the moment, the Civic Type R is the car I am most likely to migrate to (unless Mr Brown makes it financial burden by slapping excessive Eco-Tax on it's 215 CO2 rating |

The only car to turn my head, literally, in this class IS the Civic.
When I first saw one on the forecourt of Amethyst Gloucester, NHB with Storms, I nearly crashed. I drooled & dribbled until I got a test drive & loved it even more. No "family car" from Vauxhall has ever had that effect on me. In this class I think only the Megane turned my head before but that was a kind of "do I like it or hate it? can't make my mind up..." feeling. The Civic beats everything else by miles. IMHO. Although I'd probably choose Civic = Nutella due to my dislike of most fish products & a general lack of refinement in my tastes. |

My wife bought a 1.6 (SXI) Astra Sportshatch last year - and, to be fair, I think it's a great car and was seriously considering the 1.8 SRI Sportshatch before being drawn to the Civic. Can't speak about the VXR (as haven't driven one) but the Sporthatchs are well made and certainly the 1.6 is very nimble for the size of engine - my wife's car also has been squeak and trouble free (unlike mine). I would say though the that rear visability from the Sportshatch/VXR is a lot worse than the Civics! (though it does have that rear wiper).
