I have a 32" Samsung; basically for the price they're very very good.
The 40" one is the same; just bigger. http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/conten...LE40R74BDX.htm If you can afford it then there's no question, go and buy the Panasonic... http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/conten...H37PX60PED.htm an amazing TV for the price and honestly, it's going to be very difficult to tell the difference between this and the £2k+ tv's. |

Budget? Requirements (pic quality / sound / HD etc)? It's a huge subject, but a good plasma with a good scaler will give an incredible picture. A cheap LCD will look totally pants.
A good place to have a little read is: http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php |

Got a Sony Vega 32" Plasma, mate has a very high quality 30" LCD and to be honest there isnt alot in it, although deep blacks on the LCD do cause some issues (come out as grey's sometimes). Sony hasn't been tripped up yet.
Also if you thinking of Plasma make sure your floor doesnt have a maximum weight limit.... they are friking heavy as a heavy thing. I can pick up a 32" CRT television on my own no problem, no chance with a 32" Plasma unless I wanna break my back!!! |

Plasma displays are more forgiving of bad signals.
In our house we have a plasma and an LCD tv. The LCD looks best with good quality signals (DVDs etc) but shows up the bad quality form the cable digital signals. Plasma deals with the bad quality signals better, but is not as good with DVDs. Make sure your set is HD ready, with an HDMI input. If you will be watching HD broadcasts, DVDs and HDDVDs or BRDs in the future I will go LCD. If you are not that bothered with getting the sharpest picture, or have a poor signal from cable or sky, plasma will flatter and hide the grainy or noisy pictures better. And with TVs now, you generally get what you pay for. Bigger names (Sony, Hitachi, JVC, Panasonic etc) tend to be safe choices. I have heard bad things about the build quality and reliability of smaller, lesser known makes. It seems a big generalisation to me, but I was also warned to keep clear of Korean manufacturers for the same reason. Make sure you audition the Tvs you are interested in, you may find your preference is not the same as magazine reviews and such. |

Sorry about the brief one liner earlier, but someone came to the house. Thanks for all the very helpful advice, I'll remember this when I go to the retailer. A good shop is www.soundandvisiononline.com . Very good showroom, all the latest kit. Good prices, but extended warranty is extra. Whereas John Lewis charge a bit more for the tv, but give you a five year warranty free. Swings and roundabouts. Thanks everyone.

JL will price match local retaillers, so do a hunt around for one sellign at a low price, and get the JL 5yr warranty sorted out.
I would recommend www.tvandvideodirect.co.uk they're usually pretty cheap. |

Panasonic 42" all the way - had mine (pre-HD) for about 2.5 years now, it's great - must admit I had sleepless nights worrying about how something the weight of my washing machine was going to hang above the fireplace!!!
On avforums.com there are a LOT of recommendations for http://www.av-sales.co.uk/ - I wish I'd bought my plasma from them, I called them the day after I got my plasma (from Ebuyer.com on special) and ordered the wall mount, they got it to me the next day and they were very helpful over the phone, I won't hesitate to use them in the future. |

Panasonic for me too (42PHD7) - both my screen and scaler came from av-sales, and they are rare in that they know what they're talking about, helpful and cheap.

Thank you for all this info. It must be of help to others in a similar position, as well as me. I did'nt realise they were so heavy, in fact I thought they would be a lot lighter, being so slim. What makes them so heavy, and are they stable ie, grandchild proof ?. We do have a solid floor. One final thing, whats the power consumption, typically, for a 42" ?. Going to investigate the price match with John Lewis, otherwise its a no brainer for av sales.

Just an up-date. the PX600 42" with stand from av sales £1920.85. Same from soundandvisioonline.com £1697.79, free delivery. It weighs 32 kilos, so its slightly lighter than my existing t.v, and uses 261 watts . Going to see if John Lewis will match £1697, and pay for extra warranty.

I have an LG 42" Plasma (Pre HD) in the front room, and a Grundig (HD Ready) 42" Plasma in the bedroom........Plasma all the way for me.....there's just something not quite right about the picture quality on LCD's (IMO anyway!)......
I have my Xbox 360 running through the LG in the Front room via gold plated DVi cable, and I challenge anyone to spot the difference in quality between the picture through DVi or if it was through HD.......Gorgeous mate, and with the price of Plasma's falling quicker than Christiano Ronaldo, go for the biggest one you can afford!!!!! My missus really got excited by a 63" (!!!!!!!!!! |
