Airbus automatic landing video

Just a bit of fun...

Here's a fully automatic landing (it was a training flight, so I am sitting on the jump seat keeping myself occupied by videoing) at Venice. The autopilots do the whole job, and even get the aircraft so central on the runway that the nose wheel bangs the cats eyes. Humans take control again at the end of the landing roll, when you hear the loud triple chime.

EDIT: Sorry the video has been removed.

Incredible accuracy by auto pilot. I think pilots will be "surplus to requirement", in the not too distant future !!

It's what the manufacturers are talking about - getting the automatics good enough so that they can reduce the number of pilots to one, but it will be a good couple of decades yet... The current systems are good when they work, but are limited and not totally reliable. We just sit there waiting to take over when they get in a huff.

Soon there will be just one pilot and a dog up front....the dog is there to bite the pilot in case he touches anything !

Sorry, I can't resist the old jokes.

Apropos the implications of advanced technology:
I've read an urban legend that one of the Airbus planes is too heavy to take off when carrying its own documentation printed on paper.
Is this true, Pottsy?

They're excellent videos! Very interesting!

What does the computer shout 3 times upon touching down?

CZ - it shouts 'retard', that much I know. I'll leave it up to the master to explain when he comes home from being shouted at by a machine.

Thought that noise were the rumble strips to tell you to slow down!

I heard they had to build in a slight random factor on some system or other cos the impact of the landing on the same bit of the runway everytime was causing the surface to break up.

Sounds like it's calling the pilot "retard, retard, retard"... not very nice especially after all the training they have to go thru!

Isn't the plane trying to wake the retard (sorry Pilot up)?

The pilots do need to keep their hand in by doing some manual flying too, I hope!!
Cars are going that way too with auto parking, advanced cruise control, auto braking and lane keep assistance. If they work well and they link to Sat Nav and voice control; take me home will bring a whole new dimension.

There is no "random" system - just the pilots. I'd say one landing in 100 is automatic (maybe even less) and most of those are "practice" to keep us current or to check the aircraft. The automatic system is quite limited; for example no more than 20 knots crosswind (compared to 33 for a human), and needs special systems on the ground which not all airports have.

The urban myth is probably referring to the manufacturing documents, and it wouldn't surprise me. But the operating documents are all in a laptop (when we flew the Boeing we carried boxes and boxes of thick A5 folders).

The call is "Retard", the autopilot is just asking the pilot to move the thrust levers to idle, it can't do it itself. Though, yes, we all think it is just commenting on our flying ability...

Great vids Pottsy. Whilst we're on the flying subject I have a quick question. Why do the cabin lights have to be dimmed on take off and landing during night flights . I always find it a bit earie.

I'm going to try and appear intelligent here...I hope I'm right!

The cabin lights are dimmed upon take off and landing as these are the times when an accident is most likely to occur. If some form of accident did happen the lights would probably be one of the first things to be affected. If you are already in a slightly darkened environment and the lights fail it won't take so long for your eyes to adjust and save time/give you a better chance of making your escape!

Think of being in a brightly lit room then having the lights turned off and trying to find your way around, can be difficult until your eyes have adjusted to the new lighting.

Landed at Bristol a few years back in December & the fog was so thick we couldn't see the runway until a split second before touch down. That was quite heart stopping to suddenly see fast moving concrete appear & the rattly rumbling kick in!
