New corolla for europe?
I heard Toyota scrapped the next gen corolla and did a complete rewrite after seeing the civic. Also the name propably will be changed from Corolla to something other. The next gen corolla will be displayed at the paris car show next month. I bet it's still the same old boring corolla as before, cant be a match to the civic

I test drove the current model corolla.....now there's an old persons car!
In fairness once I'd driven the civic all the other cars started to look old fashioned. Not only have Honda released a great new car....all the other dealers will just have to get more adventurous in their designs. We should see some great new models over the coming years. The way the Civic is selling so well to all age groups you can see that the market was crying out for something new. The car that got me started on a new car search was the Prius. But just before settling on the Civic I sat back into a Prius and it seemed so lame and dull. Hybrid engines (especially hybrid diesels!!) are the way forward but not at the expense of design. My next car may well be the Civic Hybrid if they ever release it in the European Hatchback model. |

don't get me wrong - I have a lot of respect for toyota (I kinda have to in my line of business) but their current model range is a little 'lack-lustre' to say the least.
They are extremely capable, reliable and high quality cars and globally very popular as evidenced by 2005 sales figures of 7.4 million units and a net profit of 1.17trillion Yen (that's £5,300,000,000 But by God they are dull!! |

I must say that, apart from the current Corolla looking rather dull, it also suffers from very poor rear legroom. Certainly, not anywhere near the new Civic is the accommodation stakes.
Yes, I know it'll shortly be replaced, but even if Toyota have (to a certain extent) gone back to the drawing board, it's still pretty much impossible to do more than cosmetically tweak any new design at this late stage. So, I predict it'll be slightly less dull than the dull design they originally envisaged. That said, Toyotas are extremely reliable and well screwed together. I also think that the new Aygo is a cracking little car. Borrowed one for 2 days recently and, even on puny tyres, it was extremely chuckable on the twisty bits. Lovely gear shift, comfy suspension (unlike my old Jazz) and a rev happy engine that sounds like a baby 911. Terrific! In fact, if I hadn't bought a Civic I'd probably go for one of those. Yep, I know a class below (at least) but it was actually more fun than a Golf or Astra to drive and is dirt cheap to tax, insure and run. In fact, I could (in Hungary) buy nearly 2.5 Aygos for the price of my new Civic!! Admittedly, you can only just about fit a small ferret in the boot, but it's everything that the original mini was, namely a fun, basic runabout in an extremely well-designed small package. That said, Honda's range is infinitely more interesting than Toyota's. And think that now, many more people are associating Honda with innovative, breathrough technologies and exciting new cars. Whereas with Toyota and even Lexus, people just yawn and then try to change the subject... |

Check out the new Toyota Auris! Looks exactly the same as the current Corolla! Well ok, not exactly the same but the rumours of Toyota going back to the drawing board after Honda unveiled the Civic seem to have been largely exaggerated.
![]() And this is just the concept. I guess there's still a chance they'll tone it down, make it look more plain. Last edited by Copycat; 29th September 2006 at 08:07. Reason: Added concept-comment |

Apparently, they're going to knock the Corolla name on the head after 40 years. Instead, they'll call it the Auris.
The production version is even more yawn inducing. This is one dull looking MOFO!! As Kia and Hyundai will soon be introducing new vehicles with infinitely more design character than the Auris, Toyota should be very worried. And, I suspect, Honda execs won't be losing any sleepless nights either After all, looks get people into the car showroom and this thing is just so |

Oh but not to worry. We Finns will buy scores of these things, despite any obvious short-comings. They are very reliable and in our unimaginative heads that is all that matters. [/rant]
