Advice on a failed tooth extraction?

Okay, so about 8 months ago I was eating something and lost half a Molar. It was quite a big chunk. It would cause pain from time-to-time, but would go without the use of any drugs.

However two weeks ago it started to get a lot worse. I was in agonising pain, until three days ago I booked an emergency appointment with the NHS. That day I went in and the dentist said I'd need an extraction. I've never liked the dentist and haven't been in about 8 years.

So she starts injecting, everything goes numb. However, during the extraction I start feeling a sharp pain. I let her know and she proceeds to tell me I shouldn't feel anything and starts jamming a few more injections. Two minutes later she proceeds. As she continues; it gets worse. I explain it's not an ache, it's a nerve. She states that there isn't any nerves there due to the tooth being so decayed. At one point I was literally jumping up in the chair. She still didn't believe me. It was then called off and agreed it'd be done in the hospital.

She took a large chunk of the tooth out during the extraction, but the floor of the tooth remaining with a gap which goes through to my gum. I won't be getting this removed for maybe 3-4 weeks, could be longer until the call from the hospital comes through. The pain I was in is nothing compared to what I have now. It's excruciating. I've barely slept since and am constantly waking up all through the night (02:25am right now) in extreme pain. I've exhausted all my prescribed penicillin which didn't do anything.

The dentist said if the pain persists, to come back and we should 'try again'. I'm reluctant to do this. She barely took any of my tooth out and it was very painful. She protested all my nerves are dead, but if it wasn't a nerve; what was it?

What are my options? I really don't want to have to go back, but at the same time I really can't take this pain. It's been three days and it's like someone is constantly jamming a needle to my nerve.

ah must be painful mate, my mum had to go through that a few years back.
I'll say go to another dentistry that does emergencies or ask a different dental surgeon to do it for you or maybe go private? I know it ain't cheap but it may be worth it in the end.
Good luck!

Really feel for you mate, tooth ache is the worst pain ever!!!

I broke my tooth in half and had immense pain but found a fair amount of toothpaste on a tooth brush then run it under warm water, then gently brush the area. It will feel like someone it stabbing you in the head but keep brushing for about a minute then the pain stops for 5/6 hours.

Hope this helps mate.

Sorry you're suffering JPetrie, I can only sympathise as I HATE having my teeth done, and have lost most of my natural teeth at the not so ripe old age of 53....

Get four things, A pack of cotton buds, a bottle of oil of cloves, and a bottle of Anbesol. Not Anusol. ANBESOL!

Also a pack of Feminax pain killers, these are marketed for period pain but having stolen my wifes I know these are the best I have found for dental pain, off script.

The whole lot will cost less than a tenner, but judicious use of clove oil and anbesol, together with Feminax will certainly take the edge of the pain. Flood the Anbesol in first on a well-soaked cotton bud, and then do likewise with clove oil.

I can recommend you to my dentist, but he is in Krakow Poland. Seriously, get a cheap ticket on Easyjet, and you'll not spend more in total than you'd pay privately in the UK. Dentist is about a ten minute journey by Tram from Krakow Dworzec Glowny, Central Station - and you can get a train or bus directly from the airport.

PM if you need some help with this, I am very happy to help-the dentist speaks good english.

Good luck

Dave

Pop that sensodyne toothpaste on, meant to leave a coating protecting a nerve. Then man up and pull the rest out with pliers

I had exactly the same thing 6 months ago. In the end it was taken out in hospital under a general. I had a slight scratch in my hand as the needle went in, then 1 hour later a wake up pain free, all done.

I used to know an NHS dentist in the 90's in Reading Berks that gave valium by injection, and had 4 teeth done at the same time and a cap. Again no fuss no pain. Ask your gp for a single Valium if all else fails, this might take the edge off the extraction if you can't wait for the hospital to do it.

I had an extraction done at the hospital a few months back, wasnt bad at all and to be honest I was just glad the tooth was out as it was causing me pain.

I found you've really got to push your dentist though, as it'll be them who refer you to the hospital. If your in pain dont settle for anything other than treatment thats going to end in you being pain free.

I doubt Valium aka Diazepam is going to kill pain. It will relax you and relieve your anxiety about having it pulled. Given my experience with this for flying, you would possibly get better results with a couple of glasses of red

You have an abscess that is giving you the pain -
Tooth abscess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tooth abscess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
. You need penicillin to kill the infection before you have the tooth out - go back and ask for a prescription from you dentist.

Seriously mate, I can take my fair share of pain, but this is extreme. If you don't believe me, I'm more than happy to place a cig between our arms and see who pulls out first!

This is extreme. I can't pull it because there's not enough to grip it. The dentist was drilling a nerve! I know you're big but people have a limit, and she crossed it!

And you'll always be a commis

When I was a sous chef I chopped my finger to the bone just before a Sunday lunch service.

Went for a cig, came back and finished the service

true story.
