beware : bogus phone calls

hey guys, just a wee heads up that I have just received a phonecall (apparently from microsoft) that my pc is sending warning messages to microsoft and for it to be fixed I had to go on to a website while the guy was on the phone. I immediatly new that this was a scam but me being me, I like to wind these people up for a while before I hang up!

He wanted me to go onto "teamviewer" .com and click on the blue box. Instead i googled it and came up with a list of horror stories from people who have fell for this.

By going to the website, it allows them access to your computer and also your bank/creditcard details. I asked him if he was sure he was legit and not just a "lowlife scumbag who is trying to steal peoples bank details"

He said no no no I am doing this for you, you are making a big mistake by not going on the site that I am telling you to. I asked for a contact number, he gave me 02081442166, which (after googling) appears to be for a holiday tour operator - something to do with greece. Anyway this guy who had a very strong indian accent claimed to be called harry wilson and i was to call back and ask for him! I told him there was no chance and I hope that he gets cought and goes to jail for a long time. And he hung up!

anyway, just be carefull guys, and if any of you maybe have older relatives who maybe are a bit to trusting of strangers then please make them aware of this.

I remember hearing about this scam a while ago or something very similar! Unfortunately there are those that will fall for it but thanks for the heads up.

Yes, i dunno why nobody has found out who is doing this?? Its so blatant and obvious, why have the police not investigated this??

Too busy sat on the motorway or the side of roads having a sandwich waiting for a speeder.

A friends husband recently got caught with this.... They locked their computer with a pass code unique to them, and gave some number in Devon to call back on.... I had to use a bruit force password cracker to get past it, only to find the damage they done.... All the documents were deleted, files distroyed and installed a lovely trojon virus.

They wanted to charge him £300 a year (prob just once) for this "anti virus" software, or they won't get access to their computer.... Some right nasty people about!

That's a very direct way to put some malware on someone's computer. I guess this will become a bit more common but I think phone call stuff is probably just as easily trackable if you get the police involved.

I get at least 4 - 5 customers a month who have fallen for this and end up having to pay for the damage to be un done. I don't know how many of them just let it happen and stay quiet. They use either teamviewer or log me in now, and they don't just pose as Microsoft they pose as PC World as well.

A customer took a copy of the transcript from log me in now to the police but they weren't bothered and I reported it to our head office who weren't bothered that they were impersonating us either.
