mp3 info

I know that this isn't really the right place for this, but I know that you knowledgeable folks out there will have the answers.

I have finally had to admit that I need to do something about my waistline and so I have joined a gym. I need something to listen to while I am there and I have never owned an mp3 player, so know very little about them.
I will almost certainly NOT be buying an i-pod. I am looking at Creative and SanDisk.
1. Most of the music I want to listen to is on vinyl or old CDs, so am I correct that ripping these to a digital format will not have any DRM problems on ANY player?
2. Should I store as wma or mp3 (or some other format)?
3. If I rip a track at maximum quality, can I then make a copy with lower quality for use in the player, but keep the high quality version for playing on my domestic hi-fi?
4. If I rip a track from a CD, can I rip it at different quality settings? I.e. can I rip the same CD multiple times?
5. Will any CD software do the above or do I need anything special? Any recommendations please? I have Windows XP Home SP2 and all updates.
6. Creative have told me that the Zen Nano Plus doesn’t have a keypad lock, so it could be a problem in the gym. Is this a common feature and can you recommend an mp3 player with built in radio tuner that has it? (Around £30 to £50 or so)
7. I am not interested in having access to individual songs. I will rip a whole CD or one side of an LP in one go. Is there a maximum mp3 or wma file size (or an advisable practical limit)?

I (vaguely) have the same set of requirements as you. What I do is this:

Rip my CDs to FLAC format. This is lossless (no compression, same quality as original). You can then easily convert to a lossy format like mp3 for playing on a small player, or just play the FLAC files on a home player (Squeezebox) or a portable player.

I use EAC to rip (free and very good). FLAC and mp3 are DRM free. I rip songs individually - there's no need to rip the whole album as one, since FLAC (and mp3 if you do it right) is gapless.

I chose an Iaudio X5 player, because it is very high quality, plays FLAC files, has a large HDD (60Gb), organises music by folders (not ID3 database) and is robust.

Hope this helps.

Correct

2. Should I store as wma or mp3 (or some other format)?

I use MP3 for my portable player and WAV for burning to CD

3. If I rip a track at maximum quality, can I then make a copy with lower quality for use in the player, but keep the high quality version for playing on my domestic hi-fi?

Yes - that is why I create two version as above

4. If I rip a track from a CD, can I rip it at different quality settings? I.e. can I rip the same CD multiple times?

Yes but why would you want to?

5. Will any CD software do the above or do I need anything special? Any recommendations please? I have Windows XP Home SP2 and all updates.

I use GrooveMechanic. I tried different software but I found the noise reduction of GM to be the best and easiest to implement.

6. Creative have told me that the Zen Nano Plus doesn’t have a keypad lock, so it could be a problem in the gym. Is this a common feature and can you recommend an mp3 player with built in radio tuner that has it? (Around £30 to £50 or so)

I have an IPOD but my HP rx5935 with a 4Gb SD card gives me lots of option plus TomTom, Wi-fi, Bluetooth, Email, Word, Excel etc etc.
Bit of overkill for a music player though!

7. I am not interested in having access to individual songs. I will rip a whole CD or one side of an LP in one go. Is there a maximum mp3 or wma file size (or an advisable practical limit)?

No limit but Groove Mechanic makes splitting an LP into tracks very easy plus it makes music management easier.

Also, did I mention MP3 CDs????

Is there any particular reason why you dont want an iPod? The new Classic model at £160 for the 60GB and £230 for the 120GB is pretty good value and its a nice bit of kit. In contrasting price for £130 you can get a Sandisk player but only 8GB storage and the Creative Zen M is £250 for only 30GB.

With iTunes you can choose from various formats to rip too including DRM-Free mp3 which can be burned onto CDs and played thru your Civic with no modifications or cables.

Can I just add my opinion on the Iaudio X5s that we have? Pottsys department is the technical side of gadgets, therefore it does everything beautifully. However, as to actually using it in the gym (this is an alien place to Pottsy), it is just a flat unit and there is no way of attaching it to yourself or your clothes. I'm sure there will be a something available somewhere to help with this problem (Pottsy, you need to find me one please). And, as for it being robust, it is possible to slightly break them. Mine has bounced along the belt of the treadmill a couple of times and the joystick is now a bit temperamental .

I am also an Iaudio fan - but using the flash memory U2 (I think it is called).

Great small little thing. Available up to 2 GB.
