Warming up engine first

I keep hearing that I should always let my engine warm up to normal temperature before going full-throttle or redline.

However, a mate of mine borrowed my car recently and took it to redline a couple of times quickly after starting up the car (thankfully only happened on one occassion)

Just wondering if there will be any damage to the engine or anything I should be worried about? Will the engine still be as good?

thanks guys

Yeah always warm her up & you should of give your mate a clip good job it was only on a couple of occasions if my mate did that the car would of been stopped & made him walk back !!! It's ok for him it's not his car ! But I always let mine warm up to operating temperature before having any fun

If it was a turbocharged vehicle (from cold) then he wouldn't be a mate anymore.

As you downunder it's highly unlikely any "badness" will occur on the one-off.

Give him "the slaps" though for your own benefit !!

I drive my car as soon as I start it up, but never give it the beans until warmed up.

A car warms up faster when it is driven, rather at idle, but revving it at cold it probably a bad idea. I have heard It can cause excess gasoline to go into the exhaust and ignite in your catalitic converter. Gasoline ignition in your exhaust melts the ceramic emission filter. But I'm no expert

Everybody should be aware that the most engine damage is done in the first 5-10 mins of the warm up phase. But as been said already the car warms up faster if you drive it rather than idle it. With this in mind it's recommended that you get in and drive with 'mechanical sympathy' for 10 mins before giving it the beans. Meaning no high revving! It also implies short shifting which is good for the gearbox as well.

Same here, but as my journey to work is only about 15m I generally just take it easy.

Melting ceramic.... That's a new one on me! You will melt engine before ceramic will liquefy.

As mentioned above let it warm up sufficiently before giving it full throttle and high revs.

An incorrect gear causing the engine to labour causes more damage.

I always tuck an electric blanket around my engine at night. Don't like it getting too cold.

I wait until the idle speed drops to 1500rpm before setting off. Then I keep it under 3k until it's been warm for a good few minutes to give the oil time to warm through.

He is not your mate ....people can make him disappear

None of the componenets fit properly when the engine is cold.
That is why you dont boot it or redline it until everything fits properly and tolerances are at proper levels.

I never give my car the beans until the engine is fully warm and ready!

Why risk damaging it for inpatience!

I have to say though, i always seem to pull up at the lights vs something that wants some when my engine is cold 8-(
