The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed "too British".

Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be "offensive" to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team "too militaristically British". Red Arrows pilots were said to be "outraged", as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being "too British" is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of

I should have elaborated in my post above! The Red Arrows say that there is no truth in the story (published by The Sun).

Was it last year they were talking about 'Christmas' being too christian and offensive to minorities, with some councils banning public decorations and/or replacing the word 'Christmas' with the awful americanism 'holiday' or 'season'?

If this is true, which I hope is not (as Pottsy's link seems to indicate) it is just another case of PC gone mad, creating problems where there are none.

I don't know if I can post here what suggestion I'd offer anyone who finds us celebrating Christmas or watching the 'Reds offensive!

Shock horror, the Sun prints an untrue story. Bet it has never done that before

If you like The "Arras", you might like these cool pictures my son took of the display they put on for the QE2's visit back to the Clyde last week.

Flickr: Photos from fraserspeirs

The sharp-eyed might notice (I didn't) that there are only 8 aircraft instead of nine. Apparently one of them "broke down" and couldn't turn out.

....not just Civics that have reliabilty problems, then.

You know, I think it is sad that we are embarrassed to be proud of being british, english etc. I live abroad and people are so in awe of Britain and so in awe of our traditions etc, they laugh at us because of the Christmas thing and the red arrows etc. In my opinion we need to be proud to be british or english and not to shy away from it.

I think that part of the problem with the UK now is this Political Correctness that is killing traditional values and removing pride in the country. I think it is time we stopped apologising for the 'empire buidling' of the past and move forward into the future and stop apologising for being british/english.

America teaches us a lesson here through the fact that no matter how many mistakes they have made or how many times they try to do the right thing and it doesn't go well they are still proud to be american and I aplaud that - we should take a leaf out of their book and be proud in our heritage, history and abilites.

If I needed an excuse to ignore the olympics - this would be it.

I have a dream - buy the global TV rights for the olympics. And then not transmitting!

It's 2012, and you are very lucky you don't live in London, as they are having to pay extra council tax to help fund the games

Apologies, Foggy.

I was getting confused with Glasgow's bid to spend millions of the citizens' Hard-Earned on running, jumping and swimming for the members of the Commonwealth in 2014.

The Dear Green Place has no other costly problems to solve and can well afford to throw it's cash around.
