Night shift boredom

Following on from the how many people work nights thread I wondered how many of us go stir crazy on a night shift.
Now before I get slammed by people saying I should be doing my job let me say that most nights we are non stop but every now and again when the ward's are quiet boredom sets in and then ill start pulling my hair out with boredom
So people what are your tricks to stay awake at night, our NHS firewall blocks eBay, facebook, amazon etc so for me its usually civinfo and my mobile phone. A few people bring in iPads and kindles but I can never concentrate to read long enough at night.

How about the rest of you

I done my last night shift a few weeks back, got a move to another area so no more nights and a lot more weekends off ( work four in a fourteen week cycle) when before it was four in ten. On my nights I was basically locked in a room watching cameras. No Internet, no Mobil phones, no MP3 players, iPads, kindles etc allowed. And just before my last lot, the computers were upgraded and the DVD drives were removed. It was sooooo boring!

I sit in a control room on a process plant monitoring and yes it's boring as I'm a lone operator too. We do get tanker drivers in through the night now and then but I'm glad when they go lol as I like my own company and routines so for me it's iPod and speakers out, TV set up, and Internet access all night on PC.

Wish I had time to be bored. From the minute I go in its non stop. Even when theres a quiet moment there still something that needs to be prepared or investigated.

Eco display
move things around on people's desk, crank phone calls, condescending emails, rewrite rule and reg with hidden words and double entendre's, move things around in the office, tape people to chairs, a big of wrestling, hide and seek, trying to get others the sack, watch dvds, interweb, wait till someone falls asleep and make a loud noise so they wake up while filming it. road trips, trips to mcdonalds, play tricks on other sites, racing around in hire cars, racing around on mountain bikes. we just got up to some crazy stuff.

this one time a guy was moving and he left these flat pack boxes at work for ages and I got sick of seeing them, so i took the around his house at 3 in the morning, made them up and pilled them up outside his door, it was hilarious and he was late for work!

I'd have thought the NHS web proxy monitoring will be all over you like a bad suit if you hit iplayer.

I've known people get sacked for stuff like this.

We had someone leave a few weeks ago for excessive 'handbag shopping'.

The firewall blocks most things anyway, if iPlayer gets through then its fair game as far as I'm bothered
I would probably just say I was using it for a patient or something?
There is one woman I work with who is constantly buying things on next or booking holidays on her night shifts so I would think id be fine

It sounds like your place is a lot more forgiving than mine

Our software automatically triggers alerts if users are spending more than a specific percentage of the working week generating http traffic.

If that alert is triggered, it is sifted for what is thought to be non-work related sites, and then you are up for gross misconduct if you have consistently been spending more than a certain percentage of time on these.

As a side note - it is good to see our NHS tax money going to good use with all that online shopping..

Were a foundation trust so it works slightly different.
It is only occasionally we get a quiet night plus when on days we often work 14 hour shifts with no breaks, if we have difficult patients we can be restraining for hours at a time, its physically and emotionally draining dealing with people who want to fight you constantly. On older people's units there can be a lot of end of life care which I've never really been able to just shake off plus on top of all of this the amount of redtape and paperwork takes the absolute proverbial

Sooooo
If she wants to spend 2 hours on a quiet night shopping with her wage which she has earned regardless of it being 'taxpayers' then personally I don't see the big deal

I work in a foundation trust too, our IT department has some strange rules, like blocking anything that might be a bit political, such as trade union sites, but allowing others to maintain very busy ebay accounts. Not me I'm might add, in case our very nice IT ladies and gentlemen also own civics.
