iphone 4 - How do you unlock?

Does anyone know how to unlock an iphone 4 which is locked to the Orange network.
I'm a complete technophobe so any info would be very gratefully received.

give your network provider a call, they should be able to do it for a small fee

I contacted Orange but they said they couldnt unlock the phone without having the account details of the previous owner of the phone. I havent got them as the phone was previously used by a temporary employee of my husband's company. They have since returned to the USA and it will not be easy to contact them. The phone was given to my daughter and its all perfectly legal but I just don't have any details to pass on

take it to your nearest phone shop if that's the case, they should be able to unlock it without the need of any details of the previous owner

Depending on firmware etc you could unlock it using cydia

Google for a site called iclarified, then find the iPhone unlocking tutorial etc

Arar I waited over a year for orange to unlock mine but they never did, so used eBay and 30 quid later my phone was factory unlocked and I can use any sim

At the local Saturday market, there's stalls where people will do this for something small like a tenner.

Get a 1 month PAYG sim from orange - pop it in the phone - go into orange shop and ask them to unlock

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will have a proper look at some of the internet sites offering unlocking. I am just a little nervous of sending money to a site without knowing anything about them so will do a bit of research.

I had already tried a 'shop' in our local market but after 1 month had failed to unlock the phone so I asked for my money back. They claimed the problem was with accessing whatever they needed to access at Orange!

The need to unlock is not so urgent now as I have since bought my daughter an iphone 4s on contract but this phone would be a useful extra one to have as a backup so I will persevere.

Having played around with the iphone I'm just happy I have a Samsung S2.... much better phone

It's a program on the iPhone that lets you jailbreak an unlock and do lots more things to your iPhone.

Firmware depending, you could easily hold three buttons and unlock it lol
But if it's the latest you might have to wait.

I really gave up and just went to eBay, all I did was give them my IMEI number and waited like two days and was sent an email saying it was successfully unlocked and try put a different sim in, and voila it worked

And hello my yummy mummy hope you are well

I am having massive issues with orange unlocking it - initially they said it would take 20 days but nothing, so I called them they said 72hours - nothing. So at the 30 day mark I called again and they said 72hours and taking £10 off my bill. Now on to day 37 still not unlocked and a supervisors, supervisors, supervisor has told me they will sort it! Won't hold my breath

So I would try the eBay route if it only took couple days!

Put a sim from a different provider in and see if it works
