I have a cable connection. Upload should be 512kbit, download 10 Mbit. The upload speed is a bit of a disappointment, but for the download my modem must be chip-tuned.

Laptop Desktop.I don't know what's going on with the distance readings, My laptop reading says 100 miles and my desktop reading says 250 miles from the same server. One's upstairs and one's downstairs, my house isn't that big!!! Last edited by Dimplyred; 30th November 2007 at 15:42. |

I average about 5.5 mb download speeds with BT. you have to remenber that how far you live from the exchange and also how many other people using broadband are between you and the exchange are all factors in your speed.

![]() Then from London ![]() From BT Internet. Usually promotes up to 8mb so not far off I suppose. I generally don't have an issue with speeds, although it can be a bit temperamental sometimes. Last edited by LNT; 30th November 2007 at 14:30. |

My line passes through miles of fields, a few telegraph poles, then underground, then another couple of poles, then 2 sheep that have to be kissing for a connection, then another pole with a hilarious 4-way DP where 2 lines don't work, one sort of works and the other is mine (I have to chat nicely to the BT guys every time they are here to make sure I get the good one). Net result is that I actually get some kink of broadband, which is as much as I can hope for:

Is it the download or upload that matters ? The download seems to vary most from other peoples posts.
Mine is supposed to be 8Mbs ![]() Last edited by Munro; 1st December 2007 at 09:46. |

Quote:
The download is what matters when you are browsing. Upload is only for when you are sending files up to a website (or whatever). The 8Mb is a theoretical maximum, obtainable if the exchange is in your garden and everyone else on your exchange decides to stop using the internet. The core speed reduces with distance from the exchange, and is made worse by poor line quality. My line is wrapped in waxed paper, and was installed sometime in the 50's. But since we privatised BT, no manager will get a bonus by replacing a "perfectly good" line... adsl-distance.gif |

I'm not sure that graph applies anymore.
When I was first connected I was getting a steady 4500kbps, then over a couple of years and months this figure has steadily dropped down to 2900kbps and I'm sure it will continue to drop. I put it down to more BB users nationally, things like 4OD etc, plus Tiscali taking over my ISP and Tiscali are reknown for contention issues. |
