If it is not any of the other points mentioned it could be that the system need balancing.
After a few years of removing radiators and not putting the valve settings back correctly the system becomes unbalanced.
The pump pushes the water through the easiest route, which effectively short circuits the rest of the system, so the boiler "kettles" (all sorts of nasty bangs), a few radiators may get boiling hot with others staying cold.
I was getting worried when the winter started as I couldn't get a couple of radiators hot. Balanced the system and all is well again. it takes a while, but is the sort of thing the BG engineer should do.
Incidentaly, I've got a Potterton Neaterheat which was put in about 18 years ago (to replace a crappy microbore system). For 10+ years I had BG coverage with an annual service, but the cost kept going up, and the services got later and later, eventually I gave up, now I use a local chap.
The only thing that has gone wrong was a fuse on the control board which I changed myself and has been fine ever since.
Hope you get it sorted soon.....cold weather coming....or cuddle up with the guinea pigs!

I have a Potterton Neaterheat boiler but on the micro system.

I finally had a call today from BG they gave me the manager's mobile number and told me to call him - I did, he never called back lol
