What do you reckon my chances are??

A very annoying and strange event occurred this morning - I was chatting to a friend outside my place and we were walking round the Civ as he's quite taken with it. After one circuit we returned to the front of the car and Lo! and behold:- I've suddenly acquired a stress fracture in the windscreen on a sixteen day old car!!

What do you reckon my chances are of getting replacement/recompense out of the dealer??

Thats a really annoying thing to happen - I can't see any reason why that shouldn't be done under warranty with no problem.

However, if you can't get it under warranty, I believe most insurances cover it with no excess and no variation to your NCD, but I'm not sure on this. Its a long time since I have had a windscreen replaced, but I'm pretty sure my insurance did it no problem them.

Im not sure if the dealer would do it or not, but they should do.

As far as insurance, I was lead to beleive that a repair on a chip or whatever is free on insurance. A replacement will cost you your windscreen excess, which is usually about £60 I think

You can repairable stone chips replace on insurance free with no 'claim' to mess up you bonus.

Most insures have an exess of at least £50 or £60 on windscreens, not sure if it affects no claims bonuses, though.

I would expect dealer to sort that out, it's obviously no caused by damage to screen, and would be a fault with fitting or something.

Is the factory floor at Swindon wonky?

Might explain why this happened, as well as my horribly mis-fitting door.

definately looks like stress not a stone or anything, so yes, in my book the dr (or more to the point Honda, via the dlr) should fix it FOC.

I'd loose the pink TShirt from the front seat first though

Not seen one of those for years! I thought newer cars and tougher glass and didn't crack as easy as the old bangers I used to drive

If it's not had a stone chip then the dealer should get it replaced under warranty.

Gone the the days of DIY windscreen replacement (I remember doing one on my MarkII Escort years back - lots of fairy liquid and a long length of string...) these days, manufacturers use the windscreen to add to the structural integrity of the car (scary / strange as the may seem with a bit of glass!)

If the screen is not fitted quite right, it can easily lead to this sort of stress fracture.

I think they shall replace it because you can't see a stone impact causing the damage. I guess they will investigate the causes of the fracture but don't loose time and take it to the dealer quick.

I had a crack like that on my Focus. However, mine was definitely caused by a very obvious stone chip in the corner, and the crack got bigger every day. Had to get the screen replaced (obviously non-repairable) & paid insurance excess, etc. I can't think what could cause that sort of crack if not a stone except for extremes of heat/cold or some sort of flexing of the frame. Unless you have very large cats round your way jumping onto the windscreen (which is exactly what happened to my sloping potting shed window, resulting in a large crack).

There does appear to be a very tiny white chip to the right hand side of the crack, right next to the side pillar. It's very minute, but enough to start the crack.

Correct me if I am wrong, i thought that it would take alot longer than 16days ( * presumbly there was a crack on the first day and also taking other factors into account ) to get into that state ( not pretty ) .

I had a cracked windscreen due to stone chip ( looked like a star shape from the inside ), it took a couple of months till it got bad enough to change it. I was driving a kenari at that time, so being stingy (didn't want to pay extra ), me and my dad bought the glass from the perodua and went somewhere else to get it fix.

...not necessarily. I had a stone chip for a week with only a 2cm crack but before my eyes it just shot across to 30cm. Probably caused by cornering and the stress caused it to shoot across.

Well, wonders will never cease!

After a initial very polite, firm-but-negative reaction from the dealer despite my protestation that the crack appeared whilst stationary, on my return home I had been contacted by Honda who are arranging for a replacement screen to be fitted!

My faith has gone some way to being restored, so it's Watch this space!
