Central locking doesn't work on the boot in cold weather

Hi folks, anyone seen this on theirs....?

On a cold morning or when I come out from a days work I unlock car using the remote. All the doors unlock but the boot doesn't and the interior lights don't come on. Tried locking, unlocking, starting it, stopping it, locking, unlocking and nowt. Pushed the button on the armrest (next to the elec windows) and boot still locked. Pull the tab next to the door handle and the central locking doesn't activate.

The really weird thing is after driving about for 10 or 15 mins it locks and unlocks the doors of it's own accord. When I get out the car and try again the boot is unlocked and can be opened and shut.

I'm seriously considering rejecting my car, this is the most unreliable and most recalled car I've ever owned. So far I've had rear shockers replaced (suspension still clattering and banging), rear hatch struts, EPS module changed, clutch master cyl changed, faulty parking sensors and now the central locking is playing up. I thought Hondas were supposed to be items of quality and reliability, they certainly charge a premium for it but maybe it's the warranty underwriting I'm paying for....?

It is a joke and I agree with you.

I havent had the same problem with the boot but this evening I couldnt open my rear doors they appeared to be locked but after several attempts of pulling they opened. The boot opened but had absolutely no lift in it at all and I had to push it all the way up, highly irritating as I had to put some boxes down on the floor to do that.

I dont mind a few problems but my car is becoming beyond a joke for irritating faults now.

I am off to look at cars over the Xmas period and pray that mine is working sufficently to be able to get a good trade in or sell it privately as i am not sure I can put up with it much longer.

Taylor, Have you had your car from new, if so I doubt you could reject it at this point after owning it for so long. I think Honda would argue that the fact you have put up with it for so long means you accepted it with it's faults. Totally wrong and unacceptable I know but I think you'll find they will adopt that strategy. having said that good luck if that's the route you decide to go.

The boot has no lift in cold weather - the gas in the struts has less pressure. Mine tends to drop down and will soon need new struts.

Unfortunately its common for anything like central locking which has greased parts to misbehave in cold weather if its a poor or marginal design. This is due to the grease getting thicker and the locking/unlocking solenoids being insufficiently strong to overcome the extra drag.

Inside the front door hinge is a push button switch. This can become dislodged and can disappear into the car slightly.

It's also possible that you have a MICU fault. If you are feeling brave, you can look for faults yourself. Otherwise, the dealer will have a look for you.

The central door locking on my wife's Civic (old style) stops working in very cold weather. You reset it by a sequence of turning the key in the ignition and pressing the buttons on the key fob.

We have had Temps between -2 and -5 the past few days and I can happily say everything has been working as it should, boot opens and closes fine, struts all ok, locks working fine.

The contract of sale is with the dealer so that's who I will need to pursue to reject the car, it's not Honda I complain to. Living in Scotland I have the advantage of having 6 years (yes, 6) to reject my car which I've owned since June 06, Obviously I won't get a full refund it I get anything but you can still reject the car as not being or merchantable quality and not fit for purpose. The refund would have a charge for wear 'n' tear etc. I've already sought advice on this. It helps if there's a fault that cannot be fixed after 3 attempts by the dealer, my car has been in at least 5 times for the crashy rear suspension amongs all the other problems.

I got an offer of £12k p/x against a Mini Cooper D that I've ordered, delivery will be Jan so I may as well try the rejection route as I've nothing to loose. I've had enough of the "Power of Dreams", more like the pain of a nightmare. Not what I was expecting based on the great recomendations Accord owners (Swindon built models) gave about their cars.

I rejected my first civic (06) as had so many niggles with it. I wrote to the dealer and HUK and the result was that they gave me a decent price to trade in and get the new model (changed from a 1.4 to 1.8 and Honda paid most of the difference). I still have the letter I sent if anyone wants it!

The cold weather seems to be killing my H+K Drive+Play.

I won't switch on on a morning until I pull away and build up some revs. When I slow down it goes back off.
If i switch the heated rear window on the H+K goes off.
If I try to close the electric windows while they are already shut, when i let go of the switch the H+K switches on.

But when i tried in the evening when the weather had warmed up a bit (+2degrees) it works fine.

It's plugged into the cig light by the way.

Please don't shoot the messenger on this one but is it possible that your boot had frozen closed? The journey and the warming car may have thawed it out?

Just a thought

Not frozen, the windows were clear and the car in the garage. Also the interior courtesy light wasn't coming on when the car was unlocked, neither did the central locking operate when pulling on the lock tab on the door. Defo an electrical or control module fault. I just need to wait until it does it again and try to get to the dealer when it's in it's failed mode. I've only got the car for another couple of weeks so someone else might inherit the problem.

This is a problem known by Honda. It's caused bij a stuck microswitch in the drivers doorlock. Please contact your local dealer if the problem occurs again.

this is a known bug. The doorlock unit in the driversside door (left door in my case) has to be replaced.
This unit is mounted to the door handle at the inside of the door. It's a white unit.

I have the same intermittent fault the doors unlock but the boot doesn't on my 06 i-CTDI, went to the dealer's and he advised me he would need the car for an hour to troubleshoot the intermittent lock fault then order the parts, so i would need to take the car twice to the dealers for this defect to be fixed ,then i mentioned the micro switch in the drivers door lock to the service manager (see above lol) and he put one on order almost conceding to the known fault. thanks Suske

For the winter months I now wear a full-face crash helmet for fear of being brained by my boot lid - utter s***te, but no problem as far as the stealer is concerned!

My Civic has just suffered Boot Lock failure. Rang the dealers, who knew the problem existed, ordered the part one day and fitted it the following day. It is to do with the drivers door lock as this sends a signal to the boot lock. Mine is fine now. The dealer did say that they had replaced a few of these parts for other owners. Take your car to your dealers if you are experiencing the same problem. Hope this helps.
