dont want to rub salt into the wound but i had to have a new one last week (someone driving on my side of the road trying to avoid a puddle on a b road) cost £330! good news is i think you can order the seperate bits if you dont need to buy the complete wing mirror (i.e. housing, casing etc!)

Are you sure it was hit?
There have been a few where the metal brackets inside have failed.
One guy saw it happen!! He said it exploded!!
Here is his post:

The mirror casing consists of several parts, the main part, and a couple of shell parts, one of which is painted body colour. Its all just clipped together, so the spring generated enough of a shock to separate all the pieces and send them shooting in different directions. When explained to dealer and saw that it had not been obvously bashed they replaced without question.

Die casting leads to a crystaline structure which can be brittle and defect/void ridden if done poorly.

I imagine that the quality of the casting is variable - any small defects can suddenly propagate into large ones leading to ultimate failure when under constant tension. Its also possible a minor whack in the past with no visible damage can precipitate failure much later on. This is usually apparent if you carefully examine the fracture and know what to look for.

I am sure honda will be aware of this now as they have likely seen multiple warranty claims.
Hope you get it fixed soon

Is there any signs on the exterior of the casing that suggest it was hit, if not then the link Robbo has given for the "exploding" wing mirror may be a possible cause.

If there is no sign of impact or damage it might be worth trying a warranty claim with your dealer, I suppose it depends on how accomodating they are.

Good idea Andrea taking a print out of the thread, It might be worth dropping spacecadet and Mc_fly7 a PM though and get some more details, like who their dealers are and contact numbers of the service departments, what was said to them by the dealers at the time and who they dealt with at their dealers. It means you will have people at dealerships that can be contacted for information, by your dealer for help with submitting the warranty claim.

And it will give you more credibility.

Sorry to hear that.

Why can't some people just keep their hands to themselves.

I had my passenger wing mirror completely smashed off. There is a casting inside that sheared. I searched ebay and found a scrap dealer in the midlands. The mirror was not actually advertised, but alot of traders place a few car items on ebay for sale purely for advertising. In my case a NHB rear bumper was advertised, I called the salvage yard to ask if they had the NHB wing mirror, which they did. I paid £75 plus VAT plus delivery. I think the colour coded panel costs less that £15 if you can't get the right colour, I guess I was lucky. If you are mechanically minded, the powerfold mirror can be stripped & rebuilt just in case you are trying to make one good unit out of two damaged ones. The major problem is the spring retainer refit and you will need to remove the electrical plug to thread the wires through the mirror. I should of taken some photos to explain a bit better. Hope this helps you

Panic over I believe.

The one that a person sent me of ebay that was supposedly a power folding unit and turned out not to be actually came in Handy.

I stripped it down and plonked in the guts of my busted mirror and after a bit of cutting and rewiring to my amazement it all worked.

Granted the wiring looks a bit of a bodge job but its all water proof connectors and behind the cover who's gonna know.

ARRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!

Just drove into our road with my 2 week old NHB....passed a van parked on the double yellow and clipped his super reinforced wing wirror.

Result? - my wing mirror - instead of flipping back like most cars......completely broke off and is now hanging by the wires (as in the above posts).

I've called our work insurance people who'll book it into a garage. I was thinking it would be a simple 'clip back into place' jobby.....but reading the above posts I'm gutted!!!

How stupid...I mean I know their power folding mirrors...but surely they have some ability to flip back if you clip an object of another car? I can see myself back in the same position in no time.

How much beating does the wing mirror stand?

Hit a meeting car with it last weekend (narrow roads in Norway - but long) no damage.

I'd have wired mine to the battery by now. Little gits! I would never have done that as a kid (too scared mum would murder me if I did I think).
