Boot Carpet

Hi gang.

The carpet under the flappy lid in the boot was once lovely and tight and well fitting.

I have had the spare wheel fitted, and have noticed that the carpet now is very loose, and does not lay flat any more. If I take out the spare to reveal the carpet (now with a hole in the middle) there are massive areas where the carpet is bulging a few inces up from the floor, as if it were bunching up because it is too big. I can push the bulges flat, only to make new bulges appear nearby.

Is this normal? I know I will not spend much time in there now the spare is filling the hole, but I am not happy that the carpet is a mess now. Has anybody else experienced this? Is it worth complaining about?

And I think the shocks sound worse now they have replaced them, but that is for another discussion.

We fitted the spare tyre ourselves on my Dads Civic - no problems with bunching carpet here. Looks like they were unsure how to fit it, and pulled the whole carpet up to find out.

I think I have figured it out... I think I can feel three blocks of foam or polystyrene under the carpet, one at the 12'o'clock, and ones at 4 and 8'o'clock. The blocks seem to raise the level of the floor to meet the wheel at different points, possibly to stop movement of the wheel. The bulges I were pressing were between the blocks. They seem to be there for a reason, so I won't complain to the dealer.

Now I am curious to know if any other spares are fitted this way or is mine unique?

Bungle - this doesn't have anything to do with the other thread where the 'cup' was fitted upside down does it?

Some enterprising spannerboy at the dlr realised the wheel was loose, and decided to add these lumps instead of just turning the cup the other way up?

Looking at my spare wheel, the carpet has not been disturbed, the blocks of foam are stuck on top of it.

The instructions that come with the wheel, show the block being on top of the carpet. It may have even suggested cutting squares/rectangles for the foam blocks to fit through. We chose to do as above and stick them to the carpet. That way the carpet is not damaged, and no 'bulges'.

They removed my carpet completely!

I'm still tempted to complain; but have no proof that that wasn't the proper solution.

yes you have - Ask to see a set of the install instructions that come with the kit. At no point does it state that the carpet should be removed

I have just installed two spare's, and in both cases put the foam blocks on the top of the carpet.

The instructuons could have been a bit more vague, but I am not quite sure how it could have been managed.

I just didn't want to make a mess of the carpet, and so put them on the top.

It could just be that I am lazy

"Can't stop laughing at Bungle's initial posting! Could equally apply to something (someone!) else!!!"

Would you be refering to my namesake? I believe we have already had a discussion on rear access and flaps!

"i have just installed two spare's, and in both cases put the foam blocks on the top of the carpet.

So us with no carpet, or blocks under our carpet have had the spares fitted wrong? I am not that bothered by it for now, as that compartment will see very little practical use now.

"Bungle - this doesn't have anything to do with the other thread where the 'cup' was fitted upside down does it?

The cup was installed upside down, but from seeing that other's haave these blocks, albeit installed differently, I doubt it was an attempt to make my wheel sit 3" higher. Whoever fitted it with the cup the wrong way up obviously didn't notice or care that it was wrong, they still left it as it was to give back to me. You would have thought alarm bells would ring when it was so loose!
This makes me wonder, is these same geniouses who can't fit a spare who service and repair our cars? Worrying if it is!
