Brake pads....AGAIN?
Hi guys,
I've taken my lovely Civic to be looked at for a squeeling noise, thinking it might be a stone stuck in the brakes or something. But the brake pads need replacing...AGAIN! I had them done about 11 months ago and I've only done tops of 10,000 miles in that time, I don't race around and I haven't even taken it to a track or anything. Is this anywhere near normal or should I now start asking questions as to why this is happening? |

Do we, I know a few folks have had this problem but most don't. Just checked the pads on mine, 17K miles still on the original pads and I'd say the are about half worn front and rear and mine is the diesel so heavier. |

yes, good point. I perhaps should have said "we know that some Civs seem to chew disks" |

Hi Generationgav
I had a problem with my rear disc pads at my last service. I had done 11,000 miles. Apparently the pistons were sticking, so needed freeing off. The mechanic said that there is 70% braking on tthe front and 30% at the rear. He said that the rear pads should last 50,000 miles. Which ones need replacing? |

The car has done 33,000 now - but I bought it ex-demo with 6,000 on the clock. So not sure how the brakes were treated during that period, but I can't see a demo car being pushed too hard!
They said that the fronts need replacing and the backs are getting low. Quite interested in finding out how low though. I had the fronts replaced at National Tyres and Autocare last time. They did say they used OEM Honda parts but starting to get unsure now esp as price inc fitting seemed cheaper than just parts! Maybe this was my mistake? |

Hi generationgav
From bitter experience I would stick with the manufacturers brake parts, both pads and discs. Manufacturers these days make quite hard pads so the discs can wear down quite fast if you don't have quality discs. Also cheap pads are a nightmare they simply wear too quickly. I've had pads that have lasted less than 10,000 miles. There is alot of rubbbish out there. |

Thanks Charley, I think that might be it to be honest! I'm going to get them done at the Honda garage tomorrow (for quite a bit cheaper than other people have been quoted actually) and I'll mention it to them. The fronts have lasted over a year and the rears have lasted a lot longer, and should be replacing the car in 12 months, so not too much of an issue I guess.

As an update, my rear brake discs are also low apparently! How can this be after 33,000 miles? Esp since I've never had my fronts replaced and aren't the fronts supposed to work twice as hard?

Hi generationgav
Get the garage to check that the calipers are working correctly. It could also be a bad batch, but in any event they should have lasted longer than 33,000 miles. |

Mmm that's a terrible mileage for pads!! I usually get about 40k out of a set of front pads - maybe its how I drive? I always look forward and plan which saves a load of braking and gives my passengers a good journey too.

my civic has similar problems. I find that the breaks overheat very very easily when driving in a 'spirit' fassion.
the first set of pads were really bad and lasted about 6k, the second set lasted 12k ish and performed much much better. The new set just fitted are really bad again and i am sure will not last much more than 5 - 8k! the breaks generally i find are shockingly bad! |

Just had my first service and front pads were worn 40% and rears worn 20%. Will probably need new pads on the front at 25K to 30K miles

Smurf - word to the wise, keep an eye on them...
several people in here have reported low / normal (30/40%) wear at the first 12K service, and then somehow managed to rip through the remaining 60/70% by the time the second 24K service came round. |
