In the second scenario you don't know they exsist they attempt to sneak down the near side unaware of your turning and then impact the vehicle as you turn across their path...

Simple as that really...

As an ex cyclist in London, the cyclists in the second scenario not only annoy car drivers but also law abiding cyclists. If they are coming flying down BEHIND you, not even along side and then cut round the left of you while indicating then perhaps they need removing from the gene pool for the good of humanity.

The only time you need to give way to a cyclist is if they are already alongside you when you indicate your manouvere, or they are in a separate defined cycle lane. The excellent mirrors on the Civic will be an advantage in this case. IMO cars like the Fiat Panda with poor mirrors are much more dangerous.

The only suggestions I can think of are 'Petrol v Diesel' or 'I don't need a spare wheel'

If you have no interior, door or wing mirrors then yes.

Gosh, do you think people will notice all the cyclists that have gone missing in Canterbury now???

Tom
Weren't there thousands of them last summer on that cycle race through Canterbury?

Maybe that's why they lost so many!

I thought that might have been why I heard that scraping from my front bumper that day! Tin tacks made that day so much funnier .

Honestly I dislike cyclists here because they seem to think they have a right to be on the road (more so than we do, try playing chicken mate I dare yah'! ), they never give way, they seem to think magically they are bigger and faster than you are and they don't seem to bother what colour traffic lights are, why shouldn't they obey the same rules as us (I also think bikes should have a licence plate, like a car that shows in German fashion they have tax and insurance, they are a menace). Anyone get I hate bikes????? Oh and motorcyclists, not proper M/C like 1000cc Ducatti's etc. but 50cc oneswith youths riding them, had one trying to do the Upsala run through town yesterday, about 50mph in traffic!!!!!! I love ghostrider don't get me wrong but he's a 'professional', not a spotty oik' late for McDonalds! [Rant Over/]

I've got to say that as a keen cyclist, granted mostly off road, i didn't mean for this to turn into a cyclist bashing excersise. I'm just frustrated with my car rear screen!
Although tomorrow i am picking up my new 08 plate ES (Company Car)...so i must like something...

Here the police finally has started shaking the cyclists a little, treating them according to what they really are doing: Driving.

They are and in many ways are far more dangerous than cars especially if you don't hear them coming on the pavement (they can seriously hurt people if the whack into them).
