The annoying thing is that the one benefit which this new paint does offer is to the environment, but it doesn't really stand if we all the have to go and get our cars resprayed or all the touch-up work done

The one thing that modern car paint does have in its favour, is that it can withstand U.V. light better and tends not to fade like the good old proper stuff.
Which means we a more likely to have a good match after a ding and it will stay that way. Advice given me, by a top crash repair guy, who started off on his own and in the 30 years that I have known him, has now built his Company into, --- Well, he is certainly a millionare. |

Hard/soft? Whatever it may be. Are we thinking its harder on the bonnet than the rest of the car as believe me the paint scratches very easily on other pannels. ie the doors which funnily enough also have stone chips on them...hmmmmmmmm

If thats what I said then you can borrow it by all means. I remember whe I had the Mini the guy from AutoGlass said that he daily got called to Mini's that needed new windscreens as they were almost vertical and when the stones hit it at about 70mph they managed to crack it. This then made me think about the bonnet on the Civic, cause when a stone bounces up off the road its going in the same direction of the bonnet.

I dont know about other people's civics but mine had barely any stone chips at all, at its worst it had big un-removable scratches on several panels (one was caused by removing bird muck) even the lighter scratches that looked like they would polish out wouldnt, I also had a couple of dents in the paint on the rear panels that looked like a stone had hit the car an just dented and squashed the paint rather than chipped it (A bit like when you touch nail varnish before it is fully dry). However after the re-sprays it had perfect paintwork and it stayed that way until I sold it which was 9 months. |

Anyone tried the new Halfords Chip & Dent service ?
Auto Express tried them and gave them a good write up but that was for a non metallic red. They just rubbed down and sprayed a damaged wheel arch. I don't think small selective spraying works with metallics ? I've picked up and touched up about half a dozen on the bonnet that really needs professional attention but I want recomendations first. |

I do defo agree that the paint under the bonnet is too, too soft as when I was cleaning a small section came off onto my microfiber cloth! Now that part of the car hasn't been subject to stone chips etc.

Update. Been for the 12,500 mile service. I mentioned the paint and was asked "do you drive on the motorway a lot?". Well yes the car has seen some motorway/trunk road mileage, but so what. I was told that this is "normal wear and tear". I am so cross that I am going to write to Honda UK.

As a ex -painter for Aston martin (before they moved to Gaydon ) I can tell you catagorically that the frontal area is the problem with the civic , I`m now a paint rep and can tell you that any car with a large frontal area wil suffer the same problem the merc a-class is another example ,next time you`re at the supermarket take a walk past an a -class and you`ll see what I mean . The only way round it is to have the bonnet (i`d probally do the front wings as well - but not the bumper as it is already has a plastic additive added)resprayed before you get any stone chips in it and get the paint shop to use an elastic additive that they would for plastic parts .The paint will be soft and stone resistant but will eventually dry out and if /when you do get a stone chip you it will hopefully not penetrate deeper than the original (same colour )paint . Clear as mud really isnt it guys.

An A-class was one of my options before buying the Civic. Have a look at one year old second hand A-classes in a Mercedes Benz show room. They are full of touch up paint. |
