Rattling sound from front dash

Iv'e had my '08 Civic 1,8 AMT for about 6 months now, and I'm having some problems:

1. I have a rattling sound in the front of the dashboard (on the passenger side) when I hit certain speeds on the highway. It comes from right under where the windshield meets the dashboard. It seems to appear around 75km/h and gets worse and louder the faster I go. It also seems to get louder when I've been on the road for about an hour. The rattle is sometimes very low and slightly anoying, but after a whie it gets much louder.

I had my local Honda service center look at it. They put some foam and stuff in there and claimed to have removed the sound. When I got the car back the sound was still there and just as loud. It has a metallic almost "glassy" sound to it and it sounds a bit like if you were to put a big nut on a long thin screw and shake it really hard. Can this be from the glove compartment or the stearing column?

2. Clunky sounds from all wheels when I hit pot holes or speed bumps. The service guys at Honda said this was normal and that it was nothing to worry about. They also claimed that this was caused by temperature change and that I should wait till summer and see if it went away. I wasn't very happy with this answer, but I thought I'd give it a try and see if it gets better. After reading the threads about the faulty rear shock absorbers however, I feel obliged to contact them again.

Hopefully some of you guys have the answer to my problems. The service center guy claimed to have read all the mechanics forums etc. and found nothing about the rattle in the dashborard. I find this strange as several in this forum have complained about different squeaks and sounds.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. Have you tried to pin-point the rattle by cross-bearin with the aid from a passenger? Anyway I suggest you go back to the dealer.
Last summer I got a similar rattle from "behind the glove box", which also started at 75-80 km/h. My dealer (Bilcentrum in Trondheim) fixed, but I don't know what caused the rattle.

2. There are looong threads about this; try the info wiki first:

Try searching for windscreen cowling creak, it's an easy enough self fix

Had exactly the same but at about 90 km/h - annoying metallic sound. It was one of the elements covering the exhaust system under the car - fixed by the dealer. If it gets louder when speeding its deffinitely something caused by the wind outside the car and it penetrates into the interior - the region of glove box in the central console.

Having the exact same problem with my EX, around 80kmph upwards, I get a rattling noise from the center of of the dash, almost like a CD rattling, if you know what I mean. Very annoying.

Yes, I have same problem when vehicle speed reaches 40mph and over. Car was in at Dealer last week, and they are claiming it is possible loose wiring loom behind dash. They need car back to remove dash for further investigation. I am reluctant for them to take it off in case I end up with even more rattles, but I guess I have no choice if I want this annoyance fixed.

I have had a very similar rattling noise.
My dealer claims it is caused by a loose part in the ventilation system. I will find out Thursday if they were right when they fit the replacement parts.

I will try to find out exactly what was replaced if this does do the trick.

Yeah, my rattle sounds like it's coming from inside the ventilation duct in the center of the dash.

Guys, before you take your dash apart (and thus get more rattles) just support your (outside) windscreen cowl on felt pads and try again, you might be surprised...

I have done the 'Windscreen Fix' and checked the brake pipe lines in the engine bay.
The dealer has also replaced the centre vents, and still the noise is there

After having the car for a number of days, and putting nearly 150 miles on the clock driving around trying to trace the fault, the dealers tracked the fault down to the heater matrix pipes deep in the bowls of the dashboard.
They secured them and put some padding around them, and, fingers crossed, the car is quiet again.

After 3 trips to the dealer (the last one resulting in the car being away for 2 days and removal of dashboard again), they have finally cured the rattle.
Its nothing to do with the dash / windscreen / loose harnesses or pipework. The rattle noise when the car hits above 40mph was down to a loose bolt supporting the heat shield on the underside of the car. The location of the shield made it sound as if the noise was coming from inside the dashboard area. They were on the verge of giving up looking when they decided to have a look under the car.
I now have a silent squeek / rattle free car.......oh joy!!!!!!
Hope this helps with anyone else experiencing a rattle noise but cannot find issue with dashboard.

Good! Rattles can be painstakingly difficult. This forum is Ace - a lot of possible rattle causes must be gathered by now.

This is always a problem. I had a rattle for a short while and it sounded like something was loose in the passenger door.
Turned out to be how I had loaded the centre console.
Only found out when a passenger thought the noise was coming from my side.
Strange how these noises appear to come from somewhere totally different.

One of the best ways to locate a noise is with a length of tubing and use it as a sort of stethoscope.

I intend to do that under my dash to try and locate where the dickens they have put my non-Honda parking sensor bleeper.

I know it's under there, but can I find it !

It's far too loud for under there and I think it was designed for the boot given the volume of it.

Once found I'm hoping to put a bit of tape over it to mute it down a little.

That's what I am thinking for days now. But instead of sthethoscope a DB (decibell) meter which is difficult to be found since is an expensive machine. I have some friends engineers who have actually a db meter to measure the air in the ducts but if they discover the reason why I need it, honda will not sell any other car in Cyprus
