Vibration while idling.

Does anyone know of anything that might cause a vibration around the boot area if "loose".

While stopped at lights these last couple of days I've discovered I have a near constant vibration coming from somewhere around the boot, it isn't loud but sounds like a diesel engine at low revs. It's not serious but something is resonating with the engine. If my memory serves me right, there should be nothing more than a mild hum when the car is idle.

I've had a good poke around the boot and rear seats and can't find anything out of place or visibly loose.

If I can't nail it soon I can see another trip to the dealer coming on...

I doubt this will help much, but I had a similar vibration (more of a rattle really) which was caused by stone chippings lodged in the curved lip of the exhaust silencer heat shield. This is easy to see below the car at the rear.
I still sometimes think/imagine the exhaust is a bit resonant but have no basis for comparison as yet.
Regards, pcr.

Check also the rear seat belt buckle. They rattle against the hard plastic beside the rear seat backs at times

yep, exhaust would be my first guess - unless you have a spare wheel that's not quite tightened down, or the tube'o'gunktm is loose in the hidden compartment?

Yep, get on your back and give your chimney a good rattle - side to side as well as up and down.

Chimney? Is that what your diesel gang call exhausts? I can see why, diesels are very smokey....

Flamer!

Seriously though I would also check the exhaust first.

What does 'flamer' mean, Copycat? My understanding of 'flaming' is similar to ranting, but more aggressive.

I was just kidding about smokey diesels, and meant it as a bit of light humour. I am sorry if I offended anybody.

Back OT, has the rattling been identified or sorted yet?

Bungle, I think it was a humourous jab at you winding up diesel owners about their cars fitting the stereotypical image of being smokey.

Yep, sorry if you misunderstood. Should've been more clear I guess.

Not offended, not by a long shot, so no worries there.

OK, I've done some further inspection and it does appear to be the exhaust on the driver's side. I've given both chimneys a waggle and, though I wouldn't describe either as loose, there seems to be more play with the one on the right. I'm wondering if it's clattering against the triangular fitting.

What I can't decide though is whether this might be normal. Does anyone else experience a mild to moderate vibration from the rear of the car when idling?

I've noticed that this doesn't happen when the car is cold and is most apparent when the car is idling after a journey; at which point it's quite clear.

I'm a little

I have noticed similar vibration, especially I can feel it on a steering wheel and my sit, I hear also faint noise from the rear when stopping at traffic lights or just waiting in front of garage for gate to be open. From my point of view those vibrations happen when fan starts in order to cool down engine. When driving you do not notice that because in general fan does not start as the air coming through the front to radiator is sufficient factor to let the engine cool down. Do not worry, I think it is nothing serious. Just let any Honda garage check that fitting near triangulars.
