Battery Problem Fixed

been to dealer today , with my flat battery and charging issues , turns out honda know about this problem and how to fix it . Its a software engine management upgrade . its to do with the oil pressure sensor at idle, it s keeping computer running when engine switched off for too long , so they alter the perameters so things turn off quicker. Also when engine is on idle the fault kills power output from the alternator ie switches voltage regulator to turn the excitation current off , which switches the output volts from the alternator to zero, thus draining the battery a little costantly untill you are left with a flat battery. Dont forget when a car starts its running the ecu , fuel pumps, ignition system etc this can take up to 25 amps on its own ,without using lights radio or any luxuries. the battery is a 74 amp hour battery meaning it can deliver 74 amps for an hour. You start taking 25-30 amps out of it at idle and a lesser current keeping the cars computer running longer than needed it doesent take long to flatten a 74 a/h battery . Anyway cant explain any better because thats all they would tell me is the software update as been done and its all fine. If yor dealer dosent know anything about this upgarade then you need to ring RYLAND honda in cardiff , they can put them right over the issue ,fairplay to them they are brilliant, speak to karl service manager , hope this helps also sorry for repeating this info if already been mentioned

That all sounds really positive - has brought a smile to my face anyway!

One thing i'm a bit puzzled about if this has come from Honda is - if they know about it, why had they not applied said fix to my TR which i've only had for seven weeks? Seems a bit bonkers to me!

But it definitely sounds like progress anyway and i will be passing this on to my dealer tomorrow certainly to see what they say!!

Hope everything goes well with yours from here on in!!

I've just had my battery replaced and I was just told it was a duff battery?

It managed to muck-up the transponder codes and alarm siren as well though!!

I had the 'duff battery' excuse for my type S and i had no reason to doubt them really. It's only when it happened on my Type R i smelt a very big Japanese & swindonesque rat...

The software thing definitely seems to be more logical than an individual component. The fact that so many on the site have had different parts diagnosed as being the problem would suggest maybe it's the 'glue' as in the bit that links them all together that's probably the problem - and probably the hardest thing for the garage to identify too!

I'm due a update tomorrow which i'll post in my thread once i get it but i'm keeping with my cynical stance and not expecting it too much. As i mention, they did actually ask for it to be towed today with no jump start which seems out of the ordinary so that's raised my expectation levels mildly - seems they're looking at it properly in any case!!

Thanks a lot for this.

Spoke with Karl today and I thought would post the codes for anyone else wanting/needing this fix to save a load of calls to Karl

Part Code: 37310RFAG01
Labour Operation No: 03203
Defect No: 1255A1

Is a change to the oil level detection circuit.

Just like to say that this software fix is only for diesel models and not petrol engined variants and no disrespect to Rylands but dealers should have been aware of this problem and the fix since November last year!!!!!! Im still staggered by dealers complete ignorance of fixes that are out there that would resolve a big majority of the problems out there!!!

Flat battery

My battery went flat one week after the first service (2.2 CDi ES) The dealer had it back and charged the battery over night. He told me it was a software problem and they had installed an upgrade. If they are aware of the problem why do they not do the upgrade as a matter of course during the service and save a lot of people the inconvenience ?

If they know what the fault is they should fix it during routine servicing.....or maybe they are ?

As Deeny said it's to do with the oil pressure sensor. I wonder if changing the oil at the service caused the problem. It would be interesting to know if any one else experienced it after their service

After 19 months of working perfectly fine, my battery was flat today (after approx. 24 hours of standing still)

Interestingly I topped up my oil last week...

hmmmz

Have taken my Type S into my local honda today because of the car dying on me a few days ago. They tried saying there was nothing wrong with it first? Then I called back asking to speak to service manager, he then tells me they have applied the above update today. Not sure why they didn't want to tell me at first? Bad PR to admit faults??

Hopefully this will sort the problem! Will post back here again if not!

Cheers all

I've had this problem as well, went away for a weekend and the battery was totally dead, central locking wouldn't even work. I take it it is covered under Honda warranty as the car is only 18 months old?

Mines 07 plate Andy 1984, no quibbles with my dealer, at no stage was anything mentioned about me paying. They also gave us a loan car for day, 1.4 Civic, hmm sorry if anyone reading owns one but that car is seriously underpowered!

when the battery goes flat does this make the alarm go off or not, bit worried as I am going away soon and don't want neighbours complaining when I return as has happened before.

Mine did; but only when I tried to open the door...and it keeps going on and off for a few minutes.

I'm pleased to say I've had no problem since the new battery was fitted and checking the charge the alternator puts out is part of the service procedure.
