fuel cap

Just tried the grease solution, touch wood, seems to work. The acid test will be when I fill up tomorrow!

I took mine in for the filler to be looked at. I explained that as the lever was pulled I could hear the filler unlock, but as soon as I released the lever it locked again.
At first they were just going to do the temporary foam fix as they would need to get the new bits from Honda, but then after about an hour they came back and said it hadn't worked, so would replace the filler with a new version, which does seem to work so far. The filler only lifts up about 15mm.
The service chap said there is some adjustment on the spring, I'm not sure I believe that.

Well, the grease didn't work after all, just glad I had someone else with me whem filling up so they could prise it open as I pulled the lever. (ridiculous, or what!). I was so pleased to get this car, really love everything else about it, but this is driving me nuts. I shall ring the dealer next week and hoefully get it sorted, as you said,Terry, I shall mention that I have read up about it here

I happened to walk past the nearside today and found a small dent just under the fuel filler cap.
It wasn't there before the fix, when I filled up there was rain on the car so it didn't notice. So one job becomes 2 jobs.
I'm sure the dealer will sort it out (especially after I give them an earful about being unprofesional etc), but it still means another trip to the dealer (15 miles each way, fuel for the loan car) and the hassle of sorting a date.
Annoying!

Put mine in at 8am for the filler cap to be looked at, just been phoned back at 4:30pm to be told I have to go pick the car up, and bring it back at a later date to have it replaced.

Not very good really.

I think I have figured out how I got the dent underneath the fuel filler, and to see if there is anyone else I have started a new thread here:
Fuel filling
Probably not the service chaps fault at all, but I'm still not happy about it.

new cap fitted today, seems to be of better build and opens nicely now, when using release cable, cap now sticks out about 1cm as opposed to 2mm with old cap, like something is releasing it and giving it a push too

filler cap saga

Rang my local dealer to get it booked in and just said that I had a small problem with my civic that I wanted them to look at and the first thing he said was 'is it the filler cap?' Obviously a very common problem. But he said he would just order a new part straightaway and call me when it came in so can't complain there. Fingers crossed that it does the trick.

I was at dealers today getting another problem fixed and was talking to a member of staff about the fuel flap problem. He said that they have been told by Honda to replace the fuel flap mechanism. They are not treating it as a recall, however they will replace all faulty flaps, customers first, staff have got to wait. I got the fuel flap mechanism replacement about 2 months ago and it has been working perfectly.

Had mine replaced yesterday. It looks identical to the old one (except the yellow fuel grade sticker is missing ). There does seem to be more spring in the hinge though. It has opened 3 times so far with no problems, fingers crossed it continues that way.

I had the new cap fitted yesterday, so far it is opening ok. The dealer told me that none of the cars where they have fitted replacement caps have had further problems so fingers crossed.

Just to report that my Civic had a new filler cap fitted today and [finally] it works. I checked it three times on the forecourt and again when I got home! Had previously had sponge put in three times - absolutely useless.
My advice is to be persistant. The receptionist gave a wry knowing smile when I said the sponge repair was pointless. Two annoying things:
1. I was told it would take half an hour. It took two hours and
2. the battery needed to be disconnected so I lost radio presets and mpg figures.......but its all done now

When I had my filler cap replaced earlier in the week, I also expected a half hour wait. The dealler applogized as the fix is more than just a replacement cap that was expected. In order to get a bigger spring into the cap mechanism they have to replace the filling nozzle neck where the cap is attached to as well as the cap.

So far so good as it has opened first time.
