Had the problem with the fuel cap for a long time. Most of the times it took me 5 to 6 times to open the cap, so I decided to wait till my first service. But since a week or 2, the cap opens the first time I pull the lever, every time... So probably I am not going to mention this on my first service, since it´s working fine now. I don´t wan´t to take the risk to get my finally working cap replaced and get some brand new scratches....

I had the original foam fix done, also had the replacement unit fitted a couple of months back but it still wouldn't open first time everytime like it should.
Mine went in for its 1st service on Monday and I've now got the new spring-clip attachment, seems to pop open nicely now - see how it goes!!! |

Hello,
I have had the fix done twice on my Civic, the first one failing (not sure what the fix was), the second one with the metal spring attached to the bodywork. Now (I am unsure if I am a Muppet or not), whilst tightening the fuel cap after a refill, that bloody spring thing jumped out and bit my finger, leaving a small but deep nasty cut, luckily the first aid kit came in handy allowing me to self administer first aid on the forecourt, followed by numerous expletives. Moral of the tale - be careful I you have the spring fix when tightening the fuel cap...! Needless to say, I have been very careful with the way I hold the fuel cap when removing or tightening. As this thread is probably the longest on the forum I haven't read through all the replies so I don't know if anyone else has suggested this simple fix for the filler cap. I took a small sponge scourer from the kitchen and stuck it under the cap. Works a treat everytime, one pull of the lever and the cap pops open. Shall leave it there until the first service and then ask for the official fix.

Fuel Filler Cap - Spring Driven Thing
Forget the foam and the new filler caps. Rummage around your garage or shed and fit a suitable spring to the inside of your filler cap with duck tape. Since I fitted mine, having suffered the embarrassment of failed attempts in busy forecourts, I have had no problems. Its simple and works every time.
I realise Honda needs to come up with a production solution, but in the meantime I'm sticking with my Spring Driven Thing. For me, Spring has arrived!!! I've had the 'mod' done to the filler cap and all is now well when Millie gets thirsty.
One thing that I did notice was that before I took Millie to the stealers for the mod I gave her an 'extra special' clean, doing all the nooks and crannies and bits. That included inside the filler cap housing. On the two occasions, after that cleanup, the filler cap never failed once! The moral of the story is 'Keep it clean'. Works a treat. ......but be careful when you take the cap off as there's a good chance that you can snag your fingers on the newly installed spring! "Lifes a beach, then you drown!" Charles H. |
