Confused
I'm a little confused with regards to some of the post about the filler cap and the retaining strap. On my car the retaining strap is attached to the filler cap by a rotating collar and when I close the flap the collar rotates clockwise with the strap in the upper portion of the recess. Some of the post suggest ensuring that the strap is in a certain position but nothing I do can influence where it lies.

Hehe, just went out with my camera to check, mine is the same as yours, the problem I saw at the pumps last week is that the right end (looking at your photos) of the retaining strap is attached to a part that ROTATES around the screw cap, so yours is currently in 10 and 12 o'clock positions on your photos...
What I've seen happen is depending on what position that part is in can affect where the loop of that strap can go. Sometimes the loop of that strap can end up lying down the right-side of your screwcap so when the main cover tries to open, the loop of the strap gets *snagged* on the right-side of the screw cap and stops the cover opening properly if at all. Hope that explains my understanding of it |

wooly - mine looks identical to that, except I seem to be missing the sticker
but yes, sometimes the lead seems to twist round with the cap as I put it back in. trouble is that it takes so long between fill ups and sticks so infrequently that I can't recall if I did anything different the time before it stuck Although mine did stick tonight - scary with the DIS showing 6 miles left... |

it would be handy if you could see it in the side mirror
the one on my TT was sprung loaded, so when released (electronic button, but same basic idea), it opened to 90 degrees. easy to spot in the mirror, and it made a nice solid sounding clunk. cap was made of metal though, not plastic |

Not so much a problem for us with LHD cars. Still bl**dy annoying when it doesn't open. Mine seems to be getting worse.

One of the (supposed) benefits of having a new car is added reliability. Seems strange then, that all of Honda's engineering prowess is let down by many Civic owners being worried about whether the fuel flap opens or not!
Personally, I don't let my tank go below 1/4 now, just in case the filler cap fails to open. And that's crazy really. Surely, such concerns normally come with having an old banger and wondering if you'll actually reach your intended destination? Not with a brand spanking new Civic!! No doubt, in a few years time, the used car sections on What Car, Parkers etc. will have "sticking fuel filler cap release" as the No. 1 point on what to look for when buying a second-hand example. So far it's only stuck once and that was literally right after the handover by my dealer (I had to fill up straight away as it had less than 5 litres in the tank). And, as it's full service at petrol stations here, the attendants had a good laugh at my expense when I couldn't open the damn thing It was traumatic I tell you!! |
