Fuel cap bodge again

My dealer gave me a piece of foam to fit and showed me where to fit as it was pouring with rain.
It lasted one fill and now sticks the fuel cap shut.
I can fiddle it open though as before by pushing on the cable physically. Will tell my dealer to come up with a permanent fix.

Had mine done by the ever efficient Southern Counties Honda the other day... works a treat now (looks around wildly for some wood to touch).

I had the fuel flap fixed three times but it only lasted a short time, the dealer then replaced it. It seems the only permanent fix as it now works first time every time !

Filler Cap

Sorry about the delay re. the pic of the fillercap mod well nothing to show just looks the same as it always did ..Any way stuck again last week I think the problem could be the cable stretching any views on this theory

Was getting annoyed as ever after the umpteenth time of yanking on the lever.....decided i'd give it a try and it worked first time

Why dont they just bite the bullet and give us a decent metal cap, rather than a cheap nasty plastic one... with a proper spring release mechanism, rather than a poorly made, low quality excuse for a catch...

Rant over.

Still annoying me and still embarassing to have people look at the car then look at me looking silly trying to get the damn thing open.

Hi,dealer fitted a new spring, seems to have done the trick.
What I did before problem was fixed was to get the cap open before going to the petrol station, saves you looking like an idiot when you get there.Best of luck.

Hi, I think I've solved my filler cap problems as follows.

No matter how I pulled the cable - gently, quickly, pushing down on the cable behind the lever, etc. - there was always the chance that cap would not open. The catch always disengaged, but the spring by the hinge is too weak to always push out the flap. I haven't been able to remove the flap from its hinge and tweak the spring, so have opted for what seems a simpler and fairly infallible alternative.

I got some foam tubing that is used to lag 15mm water pipes. This comes in 1 metre lengths from DIY shops and is very cheap (e.g. 5 metres for £2 at Wickes). With a sharp knife I cut a short length of around 3 inches and then removed a segment of around 90 degrees, (see photo), which takes less than a minute. This then fits snugly on the inner fuel cap, which should be rotated until "horizontal". When the flap is closed the foam fits neatly into its curved inner surface, (see other photo). And the foam is squashed enough to always ping the flap open when you pull the lever.

The foam can be removed temporarily when at the pump, so doesn't get in the way of anything. If it gets lost or loses its flexibility, you've got enough left out from 5 metres of insulation to make about another 60 at around 3p each.

I hope this suggestion is of help to someone else.

Wilson, Brighton.

Wilson, that is a good temporary solution. I suggest that you could have fixed the polyethylene foam piece onto the lid inside (where it writes "diesel") by a double-sided sticky tape (it would be cut like a slab this time). Then you wouldn't have to remove and put on the foam piece every time you handled the cap. Just a suggestion...

I've had the foam 'mod' done, and it did.......absolutely nothing - still refused to open whilst at the BP station about 2 days after having it done

I'll dmand that they sort it properly (replace it) when I get back from the UK in January.

Mine's in today, and I said don't bother with the foam fix as it's just not working.

Mine's been in 3 times - last time was replacement which still didn't help. I've found a variation on the 'gentle pull' approach which seems to work for me. Before opening the door, I pull the lever out and keep it there. After some time (seconds), I hear a muffled click from the fuel cap area. The flap is now open. It's worked about 8 times in a row so far (more frantic wood touching!)
