My Civic is so noisy

I've done 5500 miles in my diesel Civic and I have to say the road noise is very loud. It's very wearing.

Previously I've had a couple of Meganes and they were much quieter.

I have to admit to not taking the Civic for a lengthy test drive so did not really pick up on the road noise.

Having just travelled 240 miles home, my head is spinning, so that's why I'm having a moan!

Road noise was also one of my major issues. Like you, I didn't really notice on my test drive how bad it was (too many exciting diversions). I believe that certain tyres are much better than others. Pottsy had some replacements that I think he found were much quieter than the originals.

I think this is particularly noticeable on diesels as the engine is a lot quieter at speed that the petrol variants - hence the road noise is more noticeable.

Although I have the 1.8 and not the diesel I don't really notice the road noise - now, I am not sure if that is because of the load CD playing or not .

When driving at higher speeds it does become more of an issue but no more than when I was in an Audi A6, I would suggest.

Road noise is much quieter than my old Fabia vRS. I've got the standard 16in wheels (2.2 ES) - not sure if that makes a difference to the noise or not. Regularly do a 200 mile dual carriage way trip and find it very relaxing

Thanks

I dont notice road noise in my car. I owned a megane previously to my civic and i found the civic to be a lot quieter (the engine too) compared to the megane... mines a petrol running on 18" alloys with mechelins on it too

I have to agree, my Mondeo on 225/40/18's with sport suspension was a helluva lot quieter - will be experimenting with different tyres methinks to try and quieten it down a bit - either that or crank the tunes up a bit more

I found my 1.8 civic was extremely noisey too especially in the rain, I had the car looked at an they found that door of the door seals needed replacing it did make quite a difference to the road noise afterwards so perhaps it is worth having yours checked.

You can have a go at reducing the noise yourself: Sound isolation

The tyres I used were Goodyear F1 GSD3, but these are now superseded by F1A's (and I don't know how quiet they are).

I think with tyre rumble it resonates through the car via the bodywork and there's little you can do about it.

It sounds like TC's problem was poor seals letting outside noise through rather than tyre noise ?

There was tyre noise too but it all seemed far worse with poor seals.

Check your tyre pressures, as if they are over/under flated, then that can also increase tyre noise.

I have Goodyear F1A and the car is much quieter and it seems that they are much more comfortable than the Michelin Sport PS2 I had before!

Eagle F1's are apparnetly designed to be quieter...... so perhaps a look at kwik fit or Hi-Q may be advisable (not saying necessarily to purchase them there, but they often have borchures to peruse).

Honda do not put musch sound insulation stuff in their cars
they say it is to keep the weight down

doesn't really bother us ( though the CR-V is much more refined)

I've changed the tyres to Goodyear Eagle F1A's. A very slight improvement, but not much. It's still a very noisy car and a harsh ride on rough roads. You feel and hear every part of a poor surface.

I like the look of the car, the engine, the interior space. It ticks a lot of boxes, but the noise is the bit that constantly annoys on long journeys.

I'd like to improve the sound insulation, but not sure I'm up to ripping out door panels and removing seats and carpet. Maybe someone has had it done professionally?

Change for another brand ! Since I've mooved to Yokohama the noise level is a lot lower !

Michelin Tyres are good at the beginning (first 10 000 km) then became noisier...

but for sure the civic is not the quitest car

Tom

I tried these (Eagle F1) and could not wait to get rid of them....

They may have been quieter (did not really notice) but the grip was poor and i was quite grateful they did not last as long as the others.

This was on a Civic 2.2 Diesel Sport

Currently on Continentals and they seem OK for noise and wear ...which is good when you do 20-25k miles a year !!
