Where does this squeek come from?

Well I've checked the wiki for potential squeek sources but haven't had any luck yet (see list below).

The sound is very faint (so no loud 'cracks' nor rattles). It's more like a squeek from a mouse (will put some poison in the car) or and old bed. Seems to be coming from the speedo area but pressing around there hasn't stopped it. It's also very intermittently. I mostly notice it on a good road when it get's a little bumpy here and there. Finally, a bad road doesn't make it come to the foreground. So maybe it is triggered by sideway motion rather than bumpy up and down motion.

I've nicked this list from the wiki and added my own checks (typed in green)

  • Horizontal surface, in front of the HU display. (this is where the time is displayed, right?)
  • Curved surround, above rev counter dial. Nope wasn't it
  • Windscreen (due to poor fit - repaired under warranty) fix in progress
  • Badly fitted speakers Nope, checked it out
  • Tweeter (a good press fixes this) Nope
  • Front seat Nope, ruled out.
  • Rear parcel shelf Nope
  • Seat belts rear and front- Fixed by applying some rubber tape to the plastic seat belt clips(rear both sides). Taped some small pieces of rubber tape against the side lining so seatbelt does not tap against lining directly (font passenger)
  • Area where beige pillar that meets the dash- Fixed with silicone spray
  • Air vents - don't respond to silicone spray
Any more places I could look at? I've searched to the forum pages page per page as I lack the knowlegde to come up with synonyms for squeeks rather than cracks or rattles.

Not yet. I'm going to try the windshield modification to see whether that works out. I'll keep posting about my progress.

This might help:

Try some silcone spray around the joints in the top of your dashboard. Careful not to overspray - use the thin tube that comes with the aerosol to trickle a little into the joint - capillary action will suck it in from there.

My findings (also see first post):

  1. Silicone spray does help against the cracks originating from where the beiger pillar at the passenger's side meets the dash(the one alongside the windschield). I'll take some pictures of where I sprayed and where the cracks were this evening, if the weather allows me to.
  2. The only thing that is still rattling (not the squeek) are the air vents below the radio display. I sprayed them thourougly with silicone spray but that didn't really help. A firm press does eliminate the rattles in that area, but they always seem to return.
  3. Again if weather allows me, I'll take on the windshield in order to see if my faint squeeks are related with the 'cowl creaks' mentioned on the forum (and wiki). Unfortunately(?) they have stopped because the temperature outside has dropped. Perhaps it would be wiser to wait until I can hear them again so I might be able to tell whether the cowl creaks fix worked.
Bit lame but high temps = squeek but no rattling air vents.
Low temps = rattling air vent and no squeek.

So it seems that we had the same idea Munro. What was that saying about great minds. I hope it get's warmer soon because the rattling vents are so much more annoying.

I've found it!! It's the headlight dimmer switch. If I put my finger on it when I get a squeek it stops. But it squeeks when it's in or out. Thinking of asking dealer for a new switch. It's driving me barmy (

Hi Angie,

Funny but the sound I'm getting from there is more of a cracking sound. At first, I thought it was the panel where the mirror was in on the passenger side . But the cracks there don't bother me that much. The squeak has left for now due to the still ongoing cold rainy weather.

But I did get a another to replace it. The fabric right above the head (where the grip is for the passenger) makes a rubbing noise where the fabric meets the rubber (but on the drivers side then).

We really should make a 'noise buster' sub forum
