Noise when accelerating

Had my Civic 2.2 EX with 18" wheels just over a week. Apart from the horrendous road noise, there is a worrying noise eminating from around the passenger footwell, mainly when accelerating. What have I done? This car replaces my old Subaru Legacy and although it had done 122k miles it knock spots off this thing. It was quiet, quick and comfortable which just goes to show the value of a good road test, something this Civic didn't get. I'm now lumbered as I suspect that the engine noise is nothing trivial and although the dealer is going to have a look at it I will be left with a car that's noisy or a car that's had a major repair with only 5k on the clock. Has anybody else experienced this type of noise so that I can go to the dealer pre-warned? It's a shame because I really like the look of the car and the way it drives. Ho hum.

Many thanks - Simon.

Hi dinger,

I've had my EX for a week and done nearly 700 miles. I also have an irritating noise eminating from the passenger side. However, I think it's coming from one of the door mounted speakers. Can't be certain though. It's like a vibration. Comes and goes and resonates more so, if I turn the volume up on the radio, but doesn't necessarily disappear when I turn it off!! It's bugging me and I will mention it at my dealer visit (next week)

There does appear to be more road noise than I'm used to with the 407 I had previously. I can live with that, but it gets annoying when I'm on the hands free.

I also have a couple of bonnet stone chips ALREADY!!!

Other than that, I really enjoy driving it.

I have a 2.2 iCDTi Sport, had it for 16 months and 23K miles now and apart from the road noise it is generally quiet. I'd take the car back to the dealer and insist one of the technicians goes out on a test drive with you so you can make sure they understand the issue.

Good luck

You can hear induction whistle when accelerating hard so it can sound a bit like a sewing machine, but I find mine generally quiet and refined.

I am not surprised you have road noise with 18" wheels on a small hatchback. I find road noise to be present more than previous cars on poor surfaces even with 16" wheels. On new motorway surfaces mine is virtually silent.

Are you sure its not the turbo whistle? Do you only get it under acceleration?

I like the turbo whistle if it is!!!

Thanks for all the replys. The turbo whistle is quite distinct from the other noise which is difficult to describe but hopefully is nothing major, but we'll see next week when a Honda technician (what happened to mechanics?) looks at it. As for the road noise, I did expect a bit of noise, but the 18" Storm wheels looked so good I couldn't resist them. It's just a bit worse than I expected but I suppose I'll get used to it. As for not letting the dragon in the car, what a good idea - especially as she has just curbed it and scuffed one of the aforementioned lovely 18" wheels.

I know it sounds silly, but have you checked the oil level.

Hi Dinger, did you get the dealer to fix the passenger footwell noise? I have the same problem, get it around 2000 RPM, more so under stress, like on hills. Took car to dealers, got the service manager to go for a drive and he's baffled too
